‘Europe-wide investigation’ filed against Nintendo for Joy-Con drift

Nintendo Switch Joy-Con drift is a real drag on gameplay. So much so, in fact, that The European Consumer Organization (BEUC) has submitted a complaint about Nintendo to the European Commission and national consumer protection authorities following nearly 25,000 complaints from European consumers.

As outlined in the complaint letter submitted by BEUC, Joy-Con drift “manifests itself by the fact that the characters in the game move without the player even touching the controller. This means that the player cannot control the game and thus cannot play. It makes the console useless.”

This “Europe-wide investigation” would look into the potential “for premature obsolescence and misleading omissions of key consumer information” on behalf of Nintendo where, in “July 2020, the CEO of Nintendo: Mr Shuntaro Furukawa, publicly admitted to the existence of the Joy-Con drift and apologized to its customers.”

The complaint also outlines that from customer testimonials, 88% of cases raised had game controllers that broke within the first two years of use.

The BEUC is calling for immediate action by Nintendo to address Joy-Con drift, “and until then, to repair this product for free and properly inform consumers about the limited lifespan of the Joy-Con controllers.”
