Super Mario 64 is a cult classic, easily recognized as one of the most influential video games of all time. Since its release in the 1990s, Super Mario 64 has been the subject of mods, fan-games, and much more. Modding communities from other franchises have also transitioned ideas and levels from Nintendo’s iconic 3D platformer and the Zelda series is no exception.
You might remember our coverage of a modder named Waikuteru, who developed the Flooded Forest Temple mod for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This time around they have developed yet another mod for Breath of the Wild called the “Throwback Expansion DLC,” which transports Link to Whomp’s Fortress (the second level from Super Mario 64). Whomp’s Fortress is easily one of the more recognizable levels from Mario’s first 3D outing, and it transitions into Breath of the Wild quite well.
The music throughout the level is the remix of Whomp’s Fortress that was included in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Obviously, enemies in the mod are the ones featured in Breath of the Wild, with the stage subsequently accommodating the mechanics of Link’s open-world adventure. Power Stars are available to collect, with six of them being present in the mod.
Waikuteru told us that the mod took about two months to fully develop and is now available to download on both Nintendo Switch and Wii U. You do not need to own the DLC packs for this to work either, so get downloading if you’re interested.
