Few of us who have played Twilight Princess will forget that dramatic moment when Link had to run across the fields of Hyrule on four paws with Midna on his back to rescue her. The flame-haired imp who seemed to always have a mocking comment to tease Link with suddenly barely had the energy to speak any words at all. It was truly a dramatic moment, one that would determine if Midna would live and stay with Link to the end of the story or not. The soundtrack to this moment is also something most of us have a hard time forgetting.
Tsumasaki’s lo-fi remix of “Midna’s Lament” stays true to the original’s somber sound but is more dreamlike with its muffled synth and overlapping hazy white noise. If you listen even more carefully, you can hear people talking in the background, though it’s not clear enough to understand what they’re saying or even what language they’re speaking. Their words aren’t important but not insignificant either; the music makes you focus on what’s important and instead block out the buzz that can be heard around you.
This lo-fi remix has quickly become one of my favorite tracks to keep in the background while working on something or to listen to when I’m not feeling my best. When I listen to it, it’s like my head is wrapped in unbleached cotton and I have only my own thoughts to bother me. Nothing else around me matters enough, and maybe that’s how Link felt too when he had to bring Midna to Princess Zelda so she could be rescued. The world goes on as usual but for roughly three minutes, I can ignore it and focus on the moment and task ahead of me instead.
