Yuga’s Art Gallery: Brick of the Wild

Legend of Zelda games, especially the more epic titles like Breath of the Wild, are all about escaping into distinct fantasy worlds. Naturally, then, it is only appropriate that people would try to blend their escape into the magical world of Zelda with the equally amazing escape into the magical world of LEGO.

LEGO artists Jonas Kramm, Sascha Brüning, Boba1980, and Vaionaut used their brick-building abilities to recreate a number of Breath of the Wild’s most iconic scenes, locations, and mechanized wonders. As shown in their display at Skærbæk Fan Weekend 2019, the group took great effort to provide as much detail as possible in each build. From the full model of Link’s house to the four mini models of the Divine Beast, these four artists took no shortcuts with their designs.

It’s hard for me to pick a favorite from among the models and dioramas presented, but I think, if forced to choose, then Link’s house and the Master Sword pedestal diorama would be the ones I’d throw money at to make them become mine.

Link’s house is, well, a dream home. Every detail from the game is present in the build. The exterior comes with every stone, shingle, and shrub found on the property, and it even includes a little Minifigure of the troublesome squatter Bolson. The interior is equally rich with features and includes the same layout and all of the décor found in the game’s version. The amount of time it would have taken to complete this model must have felt like an eternity during assembly, but the end result removes all doubt of whether or not the effort was worth it.

The Master Sword display, though not nearly as large or intricate as the house, is something I’m fond of due to its subject matter. It’s simple in premise, and there’s a quietness about the design. In Breath of the Wild, the Master Sword was found in the heart of the Lost Woods, far from the excitement and dangers that Link constantly encountered. But at this moment, it was only him and his blade, and that’s what has been captured with this build.

I’ll never understand why we don’t have official LEGO Legend of Zelda sets, but luckily the work that fans create is more than enough to satisfy my desire to see my favorite series in brick form. The only real problem I have with these is that they give me an all-too-strong urge to make some builds of my own.
