Yuga’s Art Gallery: Zelda-themed Smash Bros. stages

The latest patch for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was recently released, and with it came an abundance of new features for the game. Nintendo added content such as the new character Joker, an editing option for replays, and new Mii Fighter costumes. But for the purpose of this article, I’m going to explore the new Stage Builder feature and exhibit a handful of amazing Zelda-themed stages that people have shared.

The first of my selected stages is simply titled “Link” and was created by user Jonah Link. It’s a wonderful re-creation of Link’s iconic, 8-bit appearance. The stage layout is modest, consisting of only three flat, rectangular blocks for players to duke it out on. The simplicity means that battles will not be very elaborate, but it is clear that the stage’s focus is on the retro theme. And with the addition of “Overworld Theme – The Legend of Zelda” as the stage’s selected music track, the fan service is all anyone really needs.

Next up is the stage “Ganon” (another simple title, but appropriate) by user Wilder. This stage is significantly larger than “Link,” which is coincidentally appropriate, considering Ganon’s imposing dimensions. Ganon’s artwork from A Link to the Past is featured prominently in the middle of the stage, taking up much of the background. The stage is comprised of three solid platforms with four, smaller, semi-solid platforms suspended over the middle section. There are no surprises or gimmicks to be found in this stage (aside from the mostly obscured lava underneath the middle platform), but its larger size makes it fitting for intense battles with multiple players. Add in the stage’s use of “Ganon Battle – Second Form” and you have a great map to play on in free-for-alls.

The last stage I want to share is also my favorite of the three. This one is appropriately called “Midna,” and was created by user izzi. This stage is different from “Link” and “Ganon,” though for more reasons than the lack of sprite-inspired art. The image of Midna is not just featured with the stage, it is the stage. Players fight atop this massive depiction of the Twilight Princess with her helmet, legs, and other parts of her figure serving as different battle areas.

Izzi went one step further with this stage by adding warp zones, which teleport players between two points. This added hazard almost seems inspired by Twilight Princess in terms of design, so it’s a perfect compliment to the character theme. The soundtrack selected for this stage is “Midna’s Lament,” which I believe is the only natural option.

The new Stage Builder feature added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate already shows great potential as a medium for people to display their creativity. The possibilities seem almost endless. Perhaps someday I’ll feature some more Zelda stages in another article, but for now, I suggest you check out the ever-growing collection of stages available online.
