Medli’s Melodies: Storm Lullaby

This might be cheating a little bit in two ways: one, this remix includes a theme from a game of a different franchise, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island; and two, this was made by me. It’s not that I’m trying to promote my work, but I just want to share this theme with everyone and tell what it means to me.

Yoshi’s Island was a very important game for me growing up, and of course, its music stuck with me since then. It was a few years after I started as a musician and remixer that I noticed the very obvious similarities between the Castle Theme from that game, and the well-known Song of Storms, which I knew best from Majora’s Mask. This, of course, triggered my musician senses and drove me to create this mash-up, trying to capture what makes these themes unique and put it all together into what has been recognized as one of my best remixing works.

I think about exploring an ominous castle full of dangerous traps and monsters, while the weather outside is not nearly as friendly — a fierce rain falls menacingly, and lightning briefly illuminates the dark rooms accompanied by the rumbling sound of thunder. I kept that image in my mind while I was composing it, and it still comes back to me every time I listen to it.

I know it is no coincidence that both themes have such similar progressions and tones, and I know I’m not the first one to notice it or make a remix out of it, but I’m glad I can provide my perception of this peculiarity, and more importantly, the positive response of people who have been kind enough to listen to it.
