ok well I just played zelda 2 and I walked into a village house
this man was standing there and I stoke to him and he said "I AM ERROR"
what does that mean did the zelda team mess up or something?

That's a joke, or an easter egg. He also has a friend called Bagu (Bug).

Could be a bug (error), but most likely an easter egg/joke as TourianTourist pointed out.

A guy later tells you to speak with Error in order to proceed. And how would you know who that was unless he told you?

Well, I don't know if the grammatical error in the quote is correct or not, but the name is certainly no mistake. His friend is called Bagu (バーグ）, which is a mistranslation of the Japanese katakana word for "bug", as in a computer bug. If translated correctly, we would have characters named Bug and Error. So that's just a little easter egg.

I can't say whether the grammar error was purposeful or not, though.
