I Beat A Link to the Past!
Finally, after weeks of not-so-constant playing, I finally beat A Link to the Past! And I must say, even thought the last boss was pathetic, I feel achieved. The game started out great, but I couldn't help but notice the lack of puzzles in dungeons, and how linear each dungeon was. Most of the dungeons were like linear paths with only small mazes and obvious puzzles. This was made up for with hard enemies, but I found it quite unusual for a classic Zelda game to lack the puzzles that could've made it better.
Of course, the dungeons at one point started getting more complex with more puzzles, which made the game even greater than it already was. But then, when the Watergate Dungeon came along, the enemies started doing some ridiculous damage and in turn made the game ridiculously hard; probably the hardest experience I've had in a Zelda game, even surpassing AoL. This hardness lasted 'til the Ice Palace, where the difficulty finally became perfectly balanced. Then the game became from great to excellent; except for the puzzles, of course. The Ice Palace was very enjoyable, and put more (but not enough) emphasis on puzzles than the previous dungeons. Misery Mire was pathetic, but Turtle Rock was, just like the Ice Palace, a great dungeon that I really enjoyed. It was probably even better than the Ice Palace. Then came Ganon's Tower, which in my opinion was the best dungeon in the entire game. Unfortunately, the game ended with a pathetic last boss. I still felt achieved after beating him, though. So in short, the beginning and mid-game were great, but the end-game was excellent. The game achieved in every aspect EXCEPT, of course, for the puzzles. There are definitely better games than A Link to the Past out there, but I understand why it was such an amazing game at its time, and it without a doubt deserves much credit for being such a great game. ![]()

Well, as they say, nothing can be perfect. Besides, it gives ya something to build on.
Oh, and congrats. :3

Re: I Beat A Link to the Past!
Of course there are better games out there. It was made in 1991 for Christ's sake.
@man_with_thooo (ridiculous obscure nickname): Now try beating the game without upgrading the sword or picking up the armour in the Ice Palace and Ganon's Tower. I promise you, you'll not think the last boss so pathetic then. If you've been playing the GBA version of the game, and you ever get a chance to beat Four Swords, do it. Secret boss = best boss in series. As for the rest, you're absolutely right, the game is rather lacking in puzzles, but bear in mind that it's the third in the series. The puzzles started piling on immediately in Link's Awakening, which came right after. You have to accept it for what it is and view it in its original context - ALTTP is a fantastic game, but it is still very old, and it's missing a lot of the things that came after it, and you can't fault it for that. |

Re: I Beat A Link to the Past!
The four links in the GBA version was epic. They were waaaay more suitable as a final boss than Ganon.

Re: I Beat A Link to the Past!
Hmm, great game, but remember, this game was originally built for the SNES so you shouldn't have been let down when you figured out that the dungeons were very linear. But congrats mate, I remember I wouldn't stop playing the game until I finished it. Even when I got it on my trusty GBA SP I wouldn't stop playing it until I had EVERYTHING done, gotten, and achieved. Down to the last heartpiece and finally maxing out my rupees.

Re: I Beat A Link to the Past!
Congratulations!
And if you don't mind me asking, how many times did you get killed? I died 199 times. Most of them were in the Skull Dungeon and the rest here and there because I sometimes had to get killed so the magic refillers would re-appear since I never found *any* of the magic meter upgrades or got the magic potions. |
