Argh! Stupid TAoL...
Ughhh, so I'm going to try once again to finally beat The Adventure of Link, or at least FINALLY get to the second palace. But the thing is, I've been stuck in Death Mountain ever since I first got CE (which was like...well, whenever they started to hand it out, that's when I first got it). Today I had the "brilliant" idea to map the place as I go, and I guess it did help me because I finally got to the place where the hammer is (or at least, that's what I'm guessing...it looked different than the other places in DM). But those stupid ax-wielding guys killed me, and that's when I ran out of lives, which means back to the very beginning.
I can only imagine the game will get harder, so I'm trying to brace myself for what's next. Anyway, for those people out there that have beaten AoL, how DID you do it? O_o Did you want to tear out your hair or punch the TV as much as I do? Or did you use a guide?

Re: Argh! Stupid TAoL...
I realized early that if I was going to advance in the game I was going to have to level up. Be patient. The game is tough. If you take your time and increase your levels before you try to advance too far, the game won't be as frustrating.
Don't give up! The game is as hard as nails but it is absolutely worth it. Once you beat it you will feel like you can beat any game made. |

I basically spent an entire saturday leveling up, after that it wasn't so hard.

Re: Argh! Stupid TAoL...
First, spend some time leveling up. It's tedious, but if you find an area with enemies that give good EXP, use it well. Bags of EXP can only be grabbed once, so make sure that you don't die after piking them up.
To beat Death Mountain, just keep going through the caves without using the elevators. That will eventually land you on the Hammer area. The lizards' axes break through your shield, so either jump and head-stab like crazy, or use the Reflect spell (for later in the game, you won't have it at this point). Also cast Shield to take less damage. If you absolutely can not beat them, try to run past. AoL was really frustrating to me, at least the later temples. Especially the one with the Wizrobes, as it had this fake floor somewhere that constantly dropped me into the basement. And, the Wizrobes could only be killed by Reflect, and they love to teleport right on top of you. Then came the Great Temple... a maze of different rooms with strong enemies, including the gruesome Dreadhawks. A red one is challenge enough (imagine a blue Iron Knuckle jumping around like crazy and spamming sword beams), but a blue one... not even the Thunder spell could kill that thing. And then I died at the boss and had to do the entire thing over again. Yes, it's frustrating. But it's worth it when you finally beat the damn game.

Re: Argh! Stupid TAoL...
Just as everyone else said, leveling up is extremely important.
Also, take your time in the temples. Be careful. Don't try to rush though, or you'll just end up killing yourself.

Re: Argh! Stupid TAoL...
Thanks, guys!
![]() Today I beat the third palace, but I think it was purely out of luck! That Blue Iron Knuckle sure gave me some trouble, and just when I had one square of life left and no other lives, I was able to beat him. I don't think I used the best strategy, so luck was on my side that time. XD I got the Fire spell, but I'm trying to find that "kidnapped child in the islands" before I go on to the fourth temple...or maybe I can't rescue him just yet. Katuko: I saw a picture of the Great Maze in ZU and I wanted to faint as soon as I saw it. The Blue Iron Knights are a pain to beat, so I really *cannot* imagine how I'm going to deal with the Dreadhawks...oh boy. =_= But thank you all for your advice! I'll take this whole level-up thing more seriously now. ![]()

Re: Argh! Stupid TAoL...
the Blue Iron Knuckle was the hardest boss for me, other than the 2nd to last.
The thing that worked best for me, was to avoid getting in fights as much as you can. So be a coward and run away as often as possible. Keep your HP up. At full health, the sword beam can be a major help, but a single hit will force you to fight up close. And although you might be able to defeat a single Iron Knuckle easily, the next ten won't be so fun. If you do have to fight, take your time. There's no rush to get through the game. And if you see a Link doll, don't grab it. Save it for later, when you're on your way to the Great Palace. |

Re: Argh! Stupid TAoL...
One last chime in about leveling up before the thread is locked for the question being answered.
Don't bother leveling up to get spells until you absolutely need them. Use your judgement on which one you need the most and you won't have to spend all day leveling up. Things will just sorta fall into place from there. |

0nilink, thanks! But...now I only have one crystal left to place. But, of course, I have no idea where the next palace is, so right now I'm trying to look for the next town (apparently not Kasuto since that one's dead...).You know, I actually kinda find AoL somewhat enjoyable now. It's not as bad as I thought!

![]() . Sorry, I get a bit uppy when a read something even the slightest bit negative about AoL . I love the game, one of my favorite Zeldas. Here's a hint for finding the next town: There is a traveler named John. He's going around the world taking pictures of famous landmarks. He goes to York seeking to take a picture of the Statue of Liberty. But the Statue of Liberty isn't there. The thing he's looking for isn't in York. So instead of going to York he needsedto go to...

Re: Argh! Stupid TAoL...
The ghost town of Kasuto isn't the only Kasuto... Go through some caves and use the Hammer on a small 3x3 patch of trees to find the rebuilt town, where you can get the last spell.
Also, for enemies with shields (Daria, Lizalfos, Iron Knuckles, Dreadhawks), jump, then crouch in midair and stab. Crouching makes them lower their shields because they think you are crouching on the ground. Or, just jump and stab on your way down. That works too. Also, use your shield. It's in effect as long as you're not attacking, so you can block their sword swings. (If not, cast Reflect.)

I know for sure I'll replay this game after I beat it!Thanks for the hint, but I'm not quite sure I get it. XD I'll have to think about it for a bit. I defeated the Boss in the Desert Palace, but I didn't get the item, so now I'm trying to find it. I *think* I know where it is, but I keep falling into that stupid hole! ![]() Katuko: Huh...is that why the old man said to "Look east in the woods"? I never thought of using the hammer (I thought you could only use it near boulders), and I was only using the flute because I thought that the town would appear like it did with the palace. I'll have to see what's up with that. Again, thank you all very much for all the help and hints. AoL is a fantastic game, and I hate myself for having giving up so easily before.
