Man by the sign?

In ALttP, there is a man by a sign which reads something along the lines of "Ignore the average middle aged man next to the sign", and if you take the sign, he follows you.


Is that all he does, or is he there for some other reason I don't know?

He follows you around for what seems like no reason, although the guy does serve a purpose. He was actually a part of a band of thieves, or something. Anyway, his purpose is to unlock a chest that you come across in the Dark World Kakariko Village, if I remember correctly. The chest will follow you around until you take it to him.

I won't tell you what's in the chest as to not spoil the surprise.

Yep. The key is locked inside the chest, so the only way to open it is to deliver it to a master thief to pick the lock.
