How did they do it?

i never bothererd to play LoZ because it's graphicly very unapealing to me and it's a very confusing game, which brings me to my point.

How did the players around the time LoZ came out know where to go? which dungeons to complete first etc etc?
because i've nothiched in video's of other people playing and when i played a wee-bit myself that there is hardly any dialoge or guidance in the game.

oh btw i was thinking about the timeline the other day and was wondering, is it reasonable to think that Links Awakening took place somewhere near tWW and PH? why do i think this? because the game starts and ends in a great sea.. nothing more to back it up :-p

They didn't, and that was the beauty of it. There was no rule, you didn't have to follow a side scrolling screen like it was some kind of roll of toilet paper. You could walk around and do what you wanted. Granted you couldn't go to level 4 until you got the raft, but that was good cause it kept you in check, but you could do level three, then level one, then two. There was no real order, except for needed the ladder to cross water and possibly another one or two items. It was open for exploration, and you were in control.

The timeline should be in it's own thread. Think it out a bit more and give examples of why you think so and what not, and then just develop a nice thread for it ^_^

Re: How did they do it?

wow a quick reply, well i am amazed that the people kept on playing the game, if i get stuck for more then 3 days i usually give up on the game for a good year :-p
maybe we need some of that open world and "WTF am i supposed to do" stuff back in the new games, but in my opinion LoZ is EXTREME o_O no intro nothing ah well,

about that timeline thing.. i don't think a own thread for it would help because what i typed in my last post is all i've got for a theory :-p

Re: How did they do it?

The thing is, they care too much about helping today, and they try to involve the little tiny kids by giving you a constant guide. Even though they know there are millions of walk-throughs available via the internet, strat. guides and everything, they still feel the need to put in game help. I dont' get it!

I agree. Let's have Zelda go back to old school where you walk around and you wake up your whole family cause you're in your room playing the HARDEST Zelda game yet, even harder than AoL. Just screaming your head off about how you're so damn confused and you don't know where to go or what to do. And they should make it really annoying stuff, like finding a key in the most western part of hyrule to get to the most eastern part. Or you have to find a key to your own house to get your equipment. I don't know, I agree though, much harder is needed.

And as for the timeline, we'll work something out, I'll see if I can figure something out, and I'll see what I can do.

Re: How did they do it?

The excellence and mystique of the first Zelda title is that it was really the first "no boundaries game". Players could pick their own adventures path, and explore for hours without entering a single dungeon.

Probably my favorite NES game of all time, I play it occasionally to this day.

Re: How did they do it?

I am trying to go through it right now... Omg its hard. Us young gamers have it waay to easy. It would be so great if TP was like LoZ. Absolutely no help, a crappy map, the works.

Re: How did they do it?

Meh. Admittedly the game could be a pain in the ass. But it was also fun. There were limitations, but there were also freedoms. Gathering rupees *ahemRupiesahem* was a pain because they were only in ones and fives, but it made 255 rupies seem like so much more, even if the blue ring armor did cost a sadistic, blood-letting 250 rupies. Graphics were old, low tech 8 bit, but fairly well designed. f
For goddesses sakes, the pea-hats' leaves actually blurred! For an old game, quite a bit of effort was put forth. However, a lack of storyline could leave a new age player stranded.

Re: How did they do it?

I love the old NES games like LoZ that actually present a decent challenge to the player, as well.

well, the manual and map have a great deal of information actually, although buying the game in this day and age, you usually don't get it, luckily i have both Zelda 1 and 2 with the manuals and maps and stuff, so i use those as a starting point

also, there was nintendo power and other gaming magazines, if you didn't have them, one of your friends probably did, and if you didn't know how to beat a level, someone in your school could probably tell you, etc.

good times back in those days.. before the internet age..

Re: How did they do it?

Some of the stuff is so impossible to figure out without a guide. Remember one of the dungeons under the burning bush way off in the middle of Hyrule somewhere? Try figuring that out on your own lol.

Re: How did they do it?

The burning bush one was torture =O Mind I first played the original when I got Zelda Collectors Edition. Even after Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker, I enjoyed the original game loads.

Re: How did they do it?

You go around the map burning every bush, bombing every rock

and through every dungeon bombing the sweet spot on every wall.

Or you use a guide, someone tells you, nintendo power etc.

Re: How did they do it?

I would never even attempt burning more than like 5 bushes lol. I did learn to bomb all the walls in every dungeon, though.

Re: How did they do it?

I downloaded Loz for VC. All I cansay is i'm stuck. I've beaten the first dungeon. I go stumped on the first boss since you need full hearts to damage it. I can't find the second though.

Re: How did they do it?

I also wonder.

In all honesty, I would say the game is pretty much impossible without a guide. (it's nearly impossible with a guide)
