is it worth going after the older games

is it worth buying the earlier zelda games if they were before your time and are really hard to find? should everyone who is serious about zelda try to play all the games? is the experience neccessary to the hardcore fan? and can the older games compare to games like OOT or the graphics of TP?

How old are we talking? Pre-OoT? Because A Link to the Past is one of the greatest games ever made, and very much a neccessary experience.

yes, thats exactly what i had in mind as 'old'. and if you feel that way express it in the poll as well! i personally am unable to decide, having played nothing pre-OOT. this is my way of deciding whether or not to buy the games ( and the systems too i guess)

ALttP is a great game I recommend you to play it. The graphics are very detailed and the gameplay is great.

LoZ: Fun but I guess it's only really interesting if you're into retro gaming or if it has childhood memories.

AoL: Very different from the others, and very hard. Still a good game though. Only recommended if you like challeng.

LA: An absolute joy to play! strongly recommended, take the DX version if you care about graphics.

Well they can't compare to the graphics of the newer game but it is the gameplay and difficulty which makes the old games good. I have Loz, Aol and Alltp and i love them all, apart from Aol...

Just checking. Being only months away from being 10 years old, OoT is no spring chicken.

Both ALttP and LA are must-haves for any fan of the series. They pretty much set the standard for the franchise, and so many of the ideas have continued to be a strong part of the game play. Personally my favorite games, ever.

The original NES titles may well seem too dated for newcomers....

my first and earliest game system was an N64, which i got when they first came out, link was on the box ( at the time i did not even know who he was!), at any rate, when i said old i meant anything before N64, which is why i posted it on this specific forum.

Two words: Virtual Console.

If you're a fan (which you should be if you're here) I say definitely buy the older Zelda titles on your Wii.

If you can't, there's always the Classic NES Series and ALttP remake for GBA. Or, if you're like enough to find it as I was, the Collectors Edition for GameCube.

Anyway, I definitely reccomend the Virtual Console versions and a Classic Controller. Seems like the best way to go. At least that's what I did and I'm happy with the result.

Note also that I'm talking about the NES and SNES titles. For Ocarina of Time, I play the Collectors Edition. Frankly, I wouldn't want to try it with the Classic Controller, but you can use the GCN Controller with VC games, anyway, so that's not really an issue.

Definitely play aLttP [my favorite 2D Zelda game]
LoZ is pretty much a must in my eyes too, seeing as it's still fun despite being so old, and because it was revolutionary
LA is pretty much awesome
AoL is very different from the others and my least favorite Zelda game, but it's still worth a play

ALTTP is as far as I'm going to go.

I've tried playing LoZ and Aol, and it's not that I'm up to a good challenge, it's just I don't have desire to play them.

Maybe when I retire when I', 60 and have lots of time on my hands :p

If you like Zelda, then you should like the older games. OoT and MM are classics. LLTP is awesome. LA is great. I never did play the oracle games though for Gameboy Color.

The classics are the best.

Definitely but be warned, MM crashes a lot. I think Nintendo had problems porting it.

the older games for NES and SNES are worth playing and owning. The first game ever created is a must play: The Legend of Zelda. they made this into a gba game also. if u have the chance to play it dont get mad b/c u can figure stuff out. there is alot of hidden and secret thing in the game if u dont kno them.

LA and aLttP are worth getting if you're into your newer games. They aren't really that difficult, but still hold that Zelda charm we know and love. However, if you wanna see what really shaped the series - aLttP is the way to go, I feel.

Now, the 8-bit games are more difficult and lack clues/hints. Controls can be a bit off at times, too. Seriously, though, it's an 8-bit game, it should be expected. I would recommend AoL and LoZ because I love them both to death, but I admit that that recommendation involves a lot of childhood sentimentality. Not to suggest they aren't great games on their own, but I've found a lot of newer gamers get put off at the aspect of less hints, or something similar. If you consider yourself a hardcore LoZ gamer, then sure, go for it. If it's something you just like to play every now and then, maybe it'll be fun to see where it all began, but no big deal if you don't.

I've only played the first Legend of Zelda on the VC, and I can't say that I was a fan (I got kind of annoyed) but Link's Awakening and ALttP are absolutely necessary to play.

If you consider yourself a true Zelda fan and you like a good challenge then the earlier games are a must. LoZ, AoL, and ALttP are the 3 best games in the series IMO. Do yourself a favor and really get into Zelda!
