Re: is it worth going after the older games

Why not just get the Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition or the Virtual Console versions. Neither one has Link's Awakening of course, but I'm expecting VC to support GB/GBC games at some point in the future. LA is also hard as all get out to find, it took me 3 years, luckily I found DX.

As for the initial question, LttP is considered by many fans to have the best story in the series. Link's Awakening is nothing to cough at either, its a truly enjoyable game, I love it myself.

Adventure Of Link is probably the second greatest Zelda game ever. I've bought all the earlier games on their original systems, the downloads aren't feeling nearly as nostalgic as the original ones, really.

Also, DragonForce fails.

Re: is it worth going after the older games

the very first game is ridiculously satisfying to play.

I remember going from the ps2 games i was playing, to play loz for a quick minute (found it in the closet or something, and hadn't really played it before) and ended up playing it through.

Me neither; but it's a perfectly valid reason as to why one shouldn't download a ROM.

Both ALttP and LA are must-haves for any fan of the series. They pretty much set the standard for the franchise, and so many of the ideas have continued to be a strong part of the game play. Personally my favorite games, ever.

The original NES titles may well seem too dated for newcomers....
you are extremely accomplished on ZU for being that young!

He means OoT is almost ten years old, not himself

And in response to the topic, I haven't played LoZ or AoL, but LA and aLttP are amazing, aLttP has spectacular graphics considering when it was released. But I'd agree that you should probably just buy the collector's edition, LoZ, AoL, OoT and MM all in one!

Re: is it worth going after the older games

I say aim for getting all the Zelda games. Thats what i'm doing, i have all except 3 of them OOA, OOS and LA.
These games are what you call part of the 'old' games but i still have every intention of getting them.
I would have them by now but i cant find them in shops anywhere so i have to get them of the internet. Unfortunately it would take a while before i convience my parents to get me stuff of the internet but i'm getting close now.

While not "necessary" as you put it, to become a Zelda fan, the games are nevertheless fun and great experience.

Long live ALttP.

Re: is it worth going after the older games

I'd say play the older Link games to obtain more knowledge of what goes on in Zelda. I find ALttP is a little more interesting since it's a bit more colorful and...I don't know, it just seems more interesting. And then you must play OoT since it's the first 3D game of Zelda and it's cool! And then play TP (But that's not an older game, hehe.).

Re: is it worth going after the older games

In a word, yes and no. The 3D Zeldas borrow a lot from the traditional, but are so different as to create their own genre of game. It's... just not the same. It's something definetely, and certainly something good, but not the same.

before you go picking up The Hyrule Fantasy, you should be very aware of this: for most people, this game was about trading secrets and dungeon coordinates during lunch back in grade school, or making maps for yourself or said friends in school. There's very little assistance actually in the game, and what help there is tends to be so poorly translated that you don't find out what they mean until much later in the game, by yourself.

I mentioned trading dungeon coordinates. That's because this game does not have big grand structures to find and walk into. At least not many. Dungeons in this game can literally be hidden under a rock. Or a tree. Most of the frustration happens over what items you do and do not have, which makes finding a new dungeon such a bright-smile inducing experience. New item! (This especially holds true in second quest.)

As for Rinku no Bouken, don't even touch this game until you've at least played a dungeon's worth of the first game. Before passing any final judgement on it, try to at least make it to the sixth palace. You'll learn some new sword moves during your adventure that will make fighting much easier.
