Famicom LOZ used controller's microphone
I read from various sources that the Famicom version of LOZ used the controller's microphone. I did a few searches and found the following uses for the microphone. I wanted to know if anyone knows of a list or a website that further details all its uses in the game or if anyone has any more for my list. I never heard of this until yesterday. Nintendo was so ahead of its time.
1) A passage in the manual for The Legend of Zelda states that Pols Voices hate loud noises, however for non-Japanese players, this has been a source of confusion. The only item in the game that produces a sound, the recorder, has no effect on Pols Voice. The passage actually describes a feature of the Japanese Famicom version of the game; if the player made a sound into the Famicom controller's built-in microphone, Pols Voice would be slain. 2) certain ghosts will run away in fear when you blow into the mic 3) you can negotiate prices with the merchants note: 2 and 3 were from someone selling famciom LOZ on ebay so I wouldn't trust it completely. I read about the Pols voice on numerous websites however. |

Re: Famicom LOZ used controller's microphone
Hm... Very interesting. I was also very confused about the Pols Voices and the noise. I tried the flute, but nothing happened. Hm... This actually opens up some ideas for a DS Zelda. Amazing, really. They had the concepts so many years ago, and now they're going to resurface again. Amazing.

Re: Famicom LOZ used controller's microphone
I read this on Zelda Legends the other day. I've never actually heard about this, although I do believe that it's possible. After all, in the Western games, it's still said to hate noise, yet the only item that has a noise, the flute, takes no affect upon the enemy at all. So it would make sense.
Apparently it's meant to be in the Japanese manual, but I can't read Japanese, but the extract about Poll's Voice is included in my post for anyone who can.

Wow, thats really interesting, nintendo using microphones so innovativly so early on, if only us american gamers were given the same privelages as japanese gamers were.

Maybe, in 20 years time, the Power Glove will be re-invented? I hope so, that thing was the shizz.
It's nice to see how truly innovative Ninty was back then, but number 3 in the first post sounds iffy. 2 sounds plausible, though.

Re: Famicom LOZ used controller's microphone
I'm sorry but, that idea sounds really lame. Come on, scare MONSTERS? If you had to scare monsters somehow, for example saying “Boo!” or blowing in the microphone or something…That would be really lame. Seriously, negotiate? That doesn't sound fun either. Microphones and Zelda don't mix. I hope Nintendo never uses a microphone on any other Zelda game. Especially PH. Unless the characters start talking themselves. Then maybe it would be an ok idea.
All of it sounds lame, really.

Re: Famicom LOZ used controller's microphone
If you consider the fact that the monsters in question aren't meant to be particularly menacing, it makes complete sense. After all, there are loads of questionable "monsters" in Ocarina of Time, such as Stalchild's in Ocarina of Time, they're scared of sunlight and aren't even monsters. They're more like creatures.
We've only given these creatures names. I'd love there to be some more, quality innovation with Zelda, and not more Four Swords rubbish.

Re: Famicom LOZ used controller's microphone
Are you serious? Wow...

Re: Famicom LOZ used controller's microphone
There are lots of things that we don't get in the West from Nintendo. It may simply be because Nintendo never utilised the microphone enough to warrant the extra cost of putting it in a controller for the Western audiences.
