The Legend of Zelda - HELP!

Right, my problem is this: I've got past the second dungeon, and have the lanturn, but I can't seem to do anything else (IE I can't cross the river). Also I don't know how to save without killing myself. Any help on these two problems would be apreciated.

P.S I'm playing on ZU's very own BS Zelda, on Win XP.

I think you will have to specify which game this is for.
