Question Adventure of Link - can't cast spells

I appologize if this is pilot error, but I've run out of ideas.

I am playing Adventure of Link off of the GameCube Zelda Collector's Edition disk. So far I have been completely unable to cast spells, and I'm at the point where I need to cast "Jump" if I'm going to proceed.

I am attempting to cast spells by pressing start, then selecting the spell, then Y (according to the start screen, the NES select button is mapped to Y on the GC). When I do this nothing happens. I've actually tried all of the buttons from the subscreen, and none of them will cast a spell...

I've worked up to level 5 magic, so I'd expect that I should have plenty of magic points for at least jump and sheild.

Has anybody else run into this problem, or does it sound like pilot error?

- Rick

Re: Official NES/SNES Zelda Gameplay Help

Let me get this straight... You're supposed to press Start, then use Y to browse through the spells, and then confirm your choice by pressing Start again. Then you should press Y to cast the spell when the game unpauses. And that doesn't work? I don't know what could be wrong, then... You obviously have enough magic.

Lightbulb Never mind - pilot error

I found the problem this weeking - it was pilot error. I was pressing the Y button (GC's mapping for the NES Select button) while the subscreen was up.

Sorry for the wasted time..., I feel silly

Question How do you kill those LikeLikes

So here I am playing LoZ on my GBA SP, in the sixth dungeon, and I cannot seem to kill those LikeLikes. I call 'em "hamburgers," because they look like hamburgers. I've used the sword; they swallow me up, the Boomerang doesn't kill ANYTHING; and I don't want to lose any more Rupies on the Bow & Arrow. How do you kill those things?

Should I use a Bomb?

Re: Official NES/SNES Zelda Gameplay Help

You probably still have the bouken. That sword is weak, and those likelikes can take a lot.

If you have at least 5 hearts, you should upgrade to the shiroken, found in the cave at the waterfall's source. If you have at least 10, seek out the mahouken in the graveyard.

Re: Official NES/SNES Zelda Gameplay Help

In case you're confused, stevenclass, I'm guessing the shiroken is the White Sword. You can get it after getting five hearts. The Mahouken is the Magic Sword which, as Strain said, you can get when you have ten hearts.

Re: Official NES/SNES Zelda Gameplay Help

Sorry, I like to call them by their Japanese equivalents because their english translations sound so plain. It's easy enough to grasp.

いっしょ に すうがく を れんしゅうします! (Let's Practice Math!)

ぼう = bou = wood
しろ = shiro = white
まほう = mahou = magic
けん = ken = sword

ぼう + けん = bou + ken = Wooden Sword
しろ + けん = shiro + ken = White Sword
まほう + けん = mahou + magic = Magic Sword

よく できました! (Well done!)

Whoa. I always thought that you had to beat 2 levels to get the White Sword, not get five hearts. Heh, that means I could get it before netering level 1....

To kill the like-likes, stab them many many times. Simple as that.

Re: Official NES/SNES Zelda Gameplay Help

You can paralyze them with your boomerang. And while they're paralyzed, you can just walk right next to them and stab a few times. When they recover, just repeat that.

I heart boomerang.

Magic shield in LoZ?

Okay, this may be a stupid question, but I havn't played LoZ in a while. How do you get the magic shield in LoZ? Is it that shield that the merchant tries to sell you for 160 rupees? Again, sorry if this is a stupid question, but I just started playing it again last Friday.

You're supposed to push one of the gravestones, not bomb something.

Yes. Although some shops sell it for cheaper.

Here's the quote straight from ZU's LoZ Walkthrough:
"First, you need 12 hearts, then go to the graveyard location and push the gravestone in the middle row, second from the right."

Ummmm when you mean "sixth dungeon"...are you refering to the sixth dungeon you go to in the game, or the sixth dungeon in the Dark World?

I'm hoping that you have the Staff of Somaria correct? Well I got this section of ZU's ALttP Walkthrough (just make sure you are in the same room where you got the Staff. If you don't remember, it's the one with the huge treasure chest hehe).

Quote:

Go east slightly and, being wary of the two Bubbles and Wizzrobes, go through the north door on the platform. You'll come to the large abyss room; go west for a large Magic Decanter or north along the gantry to proceed.

After going down the stairs, you'll come to a dark room with a lot of red
beam launchers. Go to the south-east of this room for a locked door leading to a bonus room with lots of blue Rupees (beware; insects will crawl from the door and cause minor damage). To open the south-west door and proceed, go north slightly and lift the pot to reveal a switch, which must be held down using a Somarian Staff Block. Go through the door, go south and lift the large grey block, then immediately turn west and go through the door.

Proceed north and, while avoiding the switchblade, go west then south. Go
west again to the wall and then to the far north and set the Crystal Switch to
orange. If you can avoid the Bubble along the moving floor, the north-west
corner has a weak wall that, if blown with a Bomb, leads to plenty of (guarded) blue Rupees.

Anyway, after tripping the Crystal Switch go through the south-west door to proceed. The north wall along here needs to be bombed so you can trip another Crystal Switch, removing the blue blocks obstructing the west door (beware the freed Bubbles).

The next room has several hostiles, mostly little Blobs that fall from the
roof. Proceed to the very north of this room and set the Crystal Switch to
orange, then go slightly south to find the stairs. Once on the next floor, go
east and around to avoid the Bubble and Fire Snake and reach the west area of the room. The north door of this west area leads to the Keeper.
I hope all of that has helped you.
