Wait, forget what I said. I made a little research on the debug rom and found out that the age was changed from the real Japanese version (the one I use is a fan-translation.)
He's actually FIVE years old:
His adult age was still 17 though, which doesn't make any sense, so we can only assume that his age was changed during the course of development. Young Link was either changed to a ten years old or they both had their age changed evidence seems to suggest the former.

I can't know for sure, maybe some extremely skilled rom-hacker made this thing up, but I doubt it.
There's way more than just a stage select; unused maps, models, animations and debug features.
Some of the stuff could be seen in early beta screenshots, like the stalfos room and the beta great fairy. I even think someone was able to unlock the blade beam attack.
These things can definitely not be found in the official released of the game.
