Majora's Mask Peril Melody?

I haven't found anything about this yet, but I doubt I'm the first one to notice......

Listen to:
Southern Swamp Theme
Mountain Village Theme
Great Bay Coast Theme
and Ikana Valley Theme

The melody is the same!!!!!

In the event I'm the first to discover this, I'm unofficially naming this the Peril Melody, since it plays in an area that is covered in trials and people who are in need of aid.

I want your opinions on this!

Re: Majora's Mask Peril Melody?

It's so easy to notice.

I'm pretty sure everyone who has played MM and have reached those areas have noticed it easily. It's not really a hidden thing in the game.

This is a very common thing in all kinds of media, the same melody is reused and somethings slightly enhanced to add a feel of familiarity to the tune. the OST of SMW is entirely build on this. (although this might have been because of the forced release SMW had and thus just a lack of time.)

Hum... I think the Super Mario World soundtrack actually had variations, and it's the first time I hear it was a "quick-made" game.

Its a very common thing. If I recall, I think they had it in OOT? I think it's my memory hitting me in the head :/

Re: Majora's Mask Peril Melody?

Although it's a cool idea, I'd prefer to hear different themes. The various areas (excluding Ikana) are very forgettable, and I feel that a big part of that is due to that generic peril melody.

Actually, now that I think about it, doesn't it sound kinda like Majora's Theme?

SMW has indeed some variations, but if you listen just a little bit you hear every song has the same tune, with different instruments, speed and in some cases percussion.

Super Mario World - All Level Themes On Guitar (RjJena) - YouTube You should be able to hear it in this vid.

And it was rushed because they HAD to make it a launch title.

Re: Majora's Mask Peril Melody?

Since we were talking about a melody being reused, SMW is just the best example I know atm.

Yea, that same melody is used in every course of the game. Just altered. Y'all know, It's amazing how music works (coming from a music education major, btw).

What do you think a variation IS? SMW uses the same theme for continuity, and source material. The entire game has an incredibly unified sound track because of all of this. And it wasn't because of a time issue. As a composer I can assure you that making the same theme have 20 different aesthetics and moods to it is just as hard, if not more difficult in a lot ways, that creating a completely unique theme for each area. That same Theme has to be able to be manipulated, played with and shoved in to every kind of mood that you want it in. In no way is it getting out of anything by designing a soundtrack this way. It's a compositional choice, and definitely not a lazy or rushed one.

Don't get me wrong, I totally love SMW, especially the soundtrack. And I know that what Koji did with the soundtrack isn't easy. I am just not so sure if this was entirely on purpose. What I do know is that Koji made the entire soundtrack using only an electronic keyboard. (I also know that when you ride Yoshi you get bongo drums added to the bgm.)

Re: Majora's Mask Peril Melody?

Called a Leitmotif. A theme that repeats itself throughout a work in association with a character. Arguably the character in question is Majora itself or even possibly Link.

But yeah, I really dig that they (meaning the great Koji Kondo) was smart enough to do that.
