I've always sort of gone with what Dull Razors said. There have been rumors for years that he is supposed to be Shigeru Miyamoto, mainly because of his appearance (they have similar hair, and, although I never knew that this was a trait of Miyamoto's, a similar smile). Either way, I don't think that there really is a definite answer: I think that he was created to be a mystery, leaving us only to speculate on who and/or what he really is.

I wanted to add to the end of the topic title "...is love." But I digress. I think he is a man that likes masks. His song doesn't kill people; Darmani was already dead, and it was heavily implied that Mikau would have died of his injuries anyway.

I like the Ikana war theory, but to me, the Happy Mask Salesman is like the Indiana Jones of mask collecting....i.e., the whole it belongs in a museum mentality, forget the consequences as people's flesh is melting off their faces.

He's just lost his mind a little, just like he lost his mask.

The Happy Mask salesman is the greatest character in the series! Huzah!

I always thought of him as almost a lesser deity of Terminia. He's not as powerful as the giants, and definitely not as high up as the Goddesses, but still a deity of sorts. Perhaps he is a sage of Terminia? That doesn't sound like it could be too far off... or perhaps he was meant to protect Majora's mask, and he was the "Deity-In-Charge-Of-Guarding-The-Mask." That';s my opinion. Belief or disbelief rests with you.

That's why he's so great. He comes off as 100% good and 100% evil at the same time. It's not even 50/50. You feel like he's both at once.

Also, you know the kids on the Moon with the masks? Look closer at them. They have the same head as the Salesman, just behind the masks.

The Salesman, I believe, is a Sheik or one of the ancient tribe, possibly the leader who directly invoked the curses. Trying to redeem himself by healing the suffering, cursed souls that were struck by his cruelty.

PLOT TWIST: The HMS is Ghirahim.

He has to be a spirit of some sort. I mean, he vanishes into thin air at the end, and what was he planning to do when the moon crashed into Termina? I mean really.

I think the manga referanced him 'leaving this world' but then, thats non canon anyhow.

I think his intentions are more confusing than probably even his origins. He seems like a genuine chap at first, like guiding Link in his quest to save Termina. But then, does he truly care about Termina? Maybe he just wanted the mask before the moon fell, and didn't care about what happens so long as her departs with the mask in toe.

Though he also seemed abit gutted that the power had left the mask at the end, though not surprised. So I wonder if he wanted the mask with it's power? But again, he seemed not to angry at it, gave some farewell words, and departed to what I belive to be Hyrule by the way he said 'You should be getting back soon aswell' so it makes you wonder, is he really so mysterious?

Making him nothing more than an eccentric mask collector (with Bipolar?) who had heard stories of this one wonderfully evil mask, and he just had to have it. He probably would have known how to keep the mask under wraps aswell, but the mask called out to the Skull Kid in a effort to preserve itself. I'm sure if the HMS wanted to use it for bad intentions the mask would have sensed it and not lured the Skull Kid.

But though this makes sense to me, I dunno if I believe it.

Maybe he is a very late descendant of the Ancient ones, and through his life searching for his ancestors relic he grew ever so fond of masks? But Majora's Mask was his life goal? I dunno, I could genuinely just type and type about this, but it's nothing more than random ideas that I'm sure have no merit ^^. So I shall stop there

Well if he knew just by touching the Majora's Mask that it had evil powers sealed away in it then he must collect masks with certain abilities. He also developed a song where he traps the soul into the mask (that's creepy) so perhaps all of the masks he had were TRAPPED SOULS...that includes Mario due to the Mario mask he has

LOL! I've thought the guy rather creepy myself, especially his angry face that he makes. Brrr that was enough to give me nightmares the first time I played it. O.O

I've always found him scary, especially when he gets angry. And then after watching that creepy pasta Ben thing, it really freaked me out. I just try not to look at his face...

I remember the first time he gave angry eyes. I yelled and shut off my N64. That night, I imagined he was wearing Majora's Mask and strangling me with those angry eyes. He fell with me under him and blood was coming out of his back.

There was one cool thing about the dream, though. The man looked real, not graphically formed. He was actually a real person.

Except he actually sells SOME of the masks anyway...and where DID he get those Goron, Zora, and Gerudos masks from in OoT anyway? Did he trap souls in those masks? :O

It looks like he has botox done to his face with how he can't stop smiling.

Also the lunar children ask Link "are you a mask salesman too?" and then ask for the masks and you know the rest.
The lunar children look pretty much identical to him, if he's not one of them, which I doubt, then he certainly knows them. Also with the manga referring to him going somewhere out of this world that could either mean Hyrule or the moon, both could equally make sense. Happy mask salesman to this day remains both my favourite character and the most terrifying. I'd love to see Nintendo elaborate on him and his backstory but I doubt they will.
