Zelda II doesn't need an overhaul, it just needs Potions

Zelda II was a good game, but it was frustrating. I feel like it wasn't the gameplay that made it frustrating, so it doesn't need an overhaul if it were remade. For example, the experience system was really neat and I wish it would be used in more Zelda games. The thing that made the game frustrating was that some aspects of it were unnecessary. So if I were remaking Zelda II, there would be some things I would add.

I would add Rupees and potions, and remove the lives system. A fatal flaw in Zelda II was the inability to recharge in places far from civilization. There was the Life spell, but if you ran out of magic, you were screwed. And the lives system was really out of place, and it was dumb that Link dolls were one-off items. I would replace all the lives with bags of lots of Rupees (and you'd get Rupees instead of an extra life at max level) In the towns you would be able to buy Potions, like Red Potions, Green Potions, Blue Potions, and Purple Potions. Purple Potions are in PH and ST and they act like fairies in other games. Of course, either Rupees would be a rare drop from enemies or potions would be a bit expensive. I always thought it was really weird to have towns without shops.

I'd also make the Second Quest a proper one.

Re: Zelda II doesn't need an overhaul, it just needs Potions

I'd make it more like other Zeldas as far as giving you more items and making the sword beam effetive against everything that's not bosses or doesn't require fire. Or just make the fireballs effective against more enemies than those who can't be killed through other means.

Potions would be good, and being able to save your location would be helpful too.

I hate to take away any of the challenges. Instead of 8 levels max, I think it should be changed to 9.

Re: Zelda II doesn't need an overhaul, it just needs Potions

1. Strengthen the sword beam for God's sake.

2. Spells to consume less magic.

3. Don't abolish the lives system altogether. Otherwise, how are we going to see RETURN OF GANON? Instead, have the lives system for dungeons only, let's say three lives. It would be too easy if we can just respawn from the room we died infinite times.

4. When a Game Over happens, respawn at the beginning of the dungeon. Great Palace has this, it should apply to all of them.

5. Let the dolls still be an one-off item. For every doll, you earn one extra permanent life. In my suggestion of three lives in dungeons, earning one doll bumps it up to four permanently (as in, still starting with four after a Game Over) and so on.

So what your basically saying is that Zelda II is too hard, and you want to make it easier?

Not quite, most of the difficulty would still be presented. This thread is really about how you would give the game a polish.

Re: Zelda II doesn't need an overhaul, it just needs Potions

I think that would make the game easier, and you wouldn't really have access to potions since there's no currency in Zelda II. It would be strange if you got potions for free. You later get the healing spell, but it would have been nice to get it early in the game so you didn't have to grind for 2 days to actually make the game easier.

But introducing Rupees and Potions (as he intends them to be introduced) adds nothing to the game except a crutch in which to help one beat the game.

In a way but the act of taking away lives would also make it harder since managing where you die can be very important when playing Zelda II as it restores both life and magic. Having potions would give it a more classic feel and make the player think it is easier. The real saving grace would to have dungeons act as restart points like they do in other games.

Zelda 2 would be so much better if you could use other weapons besides the sword, like the boomerang and the bow. Potions would also be nice.

I really only wish you could save the game without it counting as a death
