Ocarina of Time Hidden Chest

So, Yall have heard about the Hidden Chest in the Geurudo fortress that's only there when your a child right. I had heard that it had an extra heart piece in it, so I went to get it and I got an Odd Mushroom. It talked about taking it to the potion shop and to hurry and take it there, but there wasn't a timer and I couldn't use it because I was a kid. Why is it there?
