Majoras Mask: Possibly #1 game?

So obviously as we all know it, that Ocarina of Time is voted and ranked number one game. I sure think it deserves that spot for sure, but I also think that Majoras Mask should be number 1, for many reasons, some that Ocarina of Time didn't have. And probably most of you think that Majoras Mask was a way better game than Ocarina of Time, for your own reasons as well.

So here's what I think. I believe if Majoras Mask came out first before Ocarina of Time, that it would have been in the number 1 game spot, replacing Ocarina of Time. But since how it was second, and Ocarina of Time came first before it, then that's why it's not up there with it.

So to my speculation, if Majoras Mask came out before Ocarina of Time, that it would be ranked number 1 game, but then again, that's just my opinion.

Does anyone else think the same way? Agree? Disagree?

I still think OoT is #1. I do believe MM is one of the best Zelda games. They finaly did something different story wise with MM and it was a great story as well.

Well yea your right, OoT is #1. But what I'm saying is that if MM was made before OoT, do you think it would be #1??

I can say OoT is better than MM because it is more complete as a Zelda game. Someone who loves the dungeons and such probably will like OoT more, but one who likes more depth in characters, side quests, and the creepy feeling that MM gives would prefer MM. Each one had what the other didn't, together they would be one astounding game, so I believe they both deserve the #1 slot.

Let's look at Majora's Mask...

Better gameplay, better graphics (like that would matter), better story, MORE EMOTIONAL.
And these things in video games that make me feel weird are the best. ALL the games with a good story made me feel weird and I thought about the game often, making theories, and so on. Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite games. If it hadn't such a good story, it wouldn't be.

Majora's Mask is definitely better, in my opinion.

I kinda agree, Link*. Some games are hyped because they came first and were 3D -- FF7, Zelda OoT, and some others "first game from X series to become 3D".

But MM is very different from any Zelda game: Hasn't Ganon as the main villain, hasn't Zelda as a main character, has a time system, hasn't the Master Sword etc, and people wanted the same old, same old Zelda from NES/SNES to the N64, in full 3D. Probably, if MM came first, the reviews would be better because it would have "Innovated the Zelda series", "innovated the Zelda gaming experience as the first 3D". I really find it funny to praise a game for being made first (In this case, being the first 3D), but what can we do? Nostalgia and being first in something are taken as a good reason to up the game's rate.

Probably, if Zelda MM came first, it and OoT would have ranked first together. I'd like that, a lot -- But because OoT came first and people wanted a sequel that looked like OoT (probably involving killing Ganon and rescuing Zelda and going in an epic adventure) -- That was praised for being the first etc etc etc -- MM had lower rates. And even today some people still rely on nostalgia to compare the two games.

But we can't go in "If"s, mostly because we can't foresee what would truly happen. Only speculation, speculation and speculation, and I really would like to know what would have happened if MM came first...

If only MM had more temples and had a better and more direct explanation at the end of the game (plus a final boss that was at least somewhat hard) it might have been, but it still probably wouldn't be #1 for it doesn't make sense for the #1 zelda game not to be in Hyrule.

The same way some games are given a hard time because of people who try too hard to be "different" and bash the games that came out first in 3D. The funny thing is that this bashing happens 10 years later? I would like to hear you say that 5 years ago.

I can personally play OoT and FF7 to this day and enjoy them. There are some 3D games for the N64 which were good series but sucked.

Its really interesting, because if you look at the overall opinion of MM at large, instead of getting the expected bell-curve, its more of a sharp devision between "MM is the best game ever" and "MM is the worst game ever".

Obviously, views of the game are highly subjective. Some people (including myself), feel that MM's departure from the traditions of the franchise really enhanced the experience, while others are of the opinion that its a betrayal to the Zelda name.

Indeed, if it had been released first, it probably would have been better-received, as nostalgia plays heavily into OoT's continued success. Then again, people would've been expecting an ALttP clone in 3D (like OoT was), and may have ended up put-out by MM's radical dynamics much as they are now.

That being said, I really do feel that MM never really got the respect it deserved, but most MM fans are even more die-hard than the average OoT fan-boy as an unintended consequence. With that in mind, I should hope that Nintendo attempts something in MM's vein again sometime in the future, as the MM fans would probably be willing to pay double what the game is worth just to escape the monotony of another OoT or ALttP clone.

Well, OoT and MM are the best Zelda games to me.

I agree, if MM came out first it would have been alot better recieved by people. Why?
-Same character models as OoT.
-Same characters as OoT.
-alot of the weapons from OoT.
-Same feel as OoT.
-Many enemies from OoT.
-Many puzzle elements from OoT
-etc...

It is true MM would have been considered better if it came out first. But lets not forget there would not be a MM if it wer'nt for OoT.

i actually totally agree. if MM came out before oot, people would love it more. cos it would be 'that revolutionary first 3D game'.

Personally, I love them both, but whilst Ocarina is more more 'epic', with more temples and such, I like Majora's darker and much less cliche storyline. A few people call Majora an 'incomplete' Zelda, but I disagree. Whereas it may be lacking in temple count, etc., it makes up for it with significantly more side quests and better character development. Didn't the marriage moments before the moon fell put a smile on your face?

Ocarina is bigger. But I do prefer Majora's Mask. Nonetheless, they're both amazing games.

But in more relevance to what you're asking, yeah, I think Majora's would probably be ahead of Ocarina if it had come out first... Much like what happened with Final Fantasy IX. It was nostalgia over evolving, and it failed against Final Fantasy VII in popularity because it wasn't a 'benchmark' in the series. If Ocarina came out after Majora's, it would be considered both nostalgic in a good and bad way.

Quite possibly yes though I guess there's no way of us knowing this. OOT was more of a traditional game; it had all the central ingredients - Zelda, Link and Ganon and it flowed together quite flawlessly predominantly which is why I think for most it is the number 1 game of the series. Because it brought all the traditional memorable elements of Zelda together in the biggest way (arguably). Majora's Mask does not have all those traditional aspects; indeed MM is kind of a niche or an offshoot. I really enjoyed the uniqueness of this game and the sinister darkness of Termina and it's inhabitants. If it came out first it could quite easily have been the better game but I think the fact that it lacks those tradional ingredients would stand against it - and for me the damn fact you're timed to do anything really made me struggle! I like to take my time with the dungeons and the puzzles and not feel rushed.

But then again, MM was the 2nd Zelda game brought to 3d, so if it was the 1st zelda brought to 3d, #1 game cuz it would revolutionize Zelda, or no?

This is exactly it. I too think MM should be rated higher than OoT.

However, as OoT was the one that brought the series to 3D, and was so revolutionary, it's always overshadowing its better counterpart.

alot of people didnt like the 3 day system but i loved it cause it made the days a resonable length
