The Ocarina of Time Pronunciation Thread

Ok, I thought it would be a good idea to see if we can clear up the correct pronunciations of the confusing terms in OoT.

These are by no means correct. This is just my opinion of what they should be, however they are of course subject to debate

When this thread has gone on long enough I will conclude with a summary of the most-preferred pronunciations based on what people have contributed to this thread.

Here we go:

Hyrule (high-rool)

Kokiri (ko-keery) 'Keery' as in eerie

Mido (mee-do) 'Do' as in joke

Deku (dee-koo)

Saria (sar-ree-ah) 'Sar' as in car.

Hylia (hill-ee-ah)

Kakariko (ka-kar-ee-ko) 'Ka' as in apple. 'Kar' as in car. 'Ko' as in coke.

Gohma (go-mah) 'Go' as in slow

Goron (gore-on)

Darunia (dah-roon-ee-ah)

Dodongo (doh-dong-go) 'Doh' as in office. 'Go' as in slow

Zora (zore-ah)

Ruto (root-o) 'O' as in slow

Malon (mal-en) 'Mal' as in pal

Ganondorf (gan-en-dorf) 'Gan' as in can

Barinade (ba-rin-ade) 'Ba' as in apple

Volvagia (vol-vahg-ee-ah) 'Ah' as in first syllable of lava. 'G' as in get

Sheik/Sheikah (sheek/sheek-ah)

Gerudo (geh-roo-do) 'Geh' as in lager (not larger). 'Do' as in close

Epona (ee-po-nah) 'Po' as in pony

That's all the most common words I can think of. Some are difficult to pronounce and others are plain obvious.

If you disagree with any of the above pronunciations, please post in this thread that you disagree and put in what you think it should be.

Also, if I've missed any other important Ocarina of Time words, please post them here in this thread as well.

Re: The Ocarina of Time Pronunciation Thread

Kokiri (Koh-ker-eye) 'Koh' as in oh

Mido (Mie-doh) 'Mie' as in pie, 'doh' as in dough

Hylia (High-lee-a)

Kakariko (Ka-kuh-ree-ko) 'Ka' as in apple, 'ko' as in oh

Gerudo (Ger-roo-doh)

That's how I say them, anyway.

I agree on most of the pronounciations but I say some differently, like...

Gerudo (Grr-oo-do) Grr like a dog, oo like "Ooh, what's that?", and do like doe

Malon (Mal-on) Mal like uhh... Mal and on like on

I agree with most of yours, except the ones that maian pointed out.
But I say "Gerudo" (Jer-oo-do) Jer like "chair", do like "dough".

Re: The Ocarina of Time Pronunciation Thread

I have to disagree with Deku Tree being "dee-koh" its "deh-koo" because "dee" is just like saying DEEku as in saying the LETTER "E". It is sayed above too.

Re: The Ocarina of Time Pronunciation Thread

Being a Finn my pronunciation is probably the most twisted of them all.

One of the mistakes I tend to make again and again is adding a weird ‘gaia’ to the end of Volvagia.

Re: The Ocarina of Time Pronunciation Thread

I always thought Barinade's name was bronounced like this:

Barinade (ba-ree-nah-de) As in, ba like the sound sheep make, ree like reel that you fish with, nah like (for lack of a better description) the opposite of yeah or a slang word for no, and de literally pronounced day.

*the 'r' should be slightly rolled, like when you make the 'd' sound's shape with your toung. I hope that's not too confusing*

And a side note, my nickname in school is Malon, but nobody can agree on the pronounciation. I say it like mal-on ('mal' as in malpractice, and 'on' as in turn on the light.) but one of my friends swears it's said just as muh-lan. we each have our emphasis on different syllables.

Some of these I disagree with.

I pronounce it ko-kir-ee ('Ko' rhyming with 'no', 'kir' rhyming with 'fir')

Quote:
Deku (dee-koo)
I really beg to differ here! I'd seriously like to know why some people pronounce it dee-koo. I've always pronounced it deh-koo ('deh' sounding like the first part of 'deck'), and can think of no way the spelling of the word allows for any other pronounciation.

Quote:
Saria (sar-ree-ah) 'Sar' as in car.
I've always said it as suh-ree-ah ('suh' sounding like the first part of 'suddenly').

Quote:
Hylia (hill-ee-ah)
High-lee-uh to me. Always has been, always will.

Quote:
Malon (mal-en) 'Mal' as in pal
I've always said it mal-on, just like it's spelled.

Quote:
Ganondorf (gan-en-dorf) 'Gan' as in can
It doesn't make much of a difference, but I say it as gan-on-dorf.

Quote:
Volvagia (vol-vahg-ee-ah) 'Ah' as in first syllable of lava. 'G' as in get
I always said vol-vuh-gee-uh.
