White Stripes
So, any White Stripes fans in the house?
Personally I think Jack White is one of the best guitarists to show up in the last couple decades. Meg isn't the best drummer ever, but not too shabby. Their albums go like this for awesomeness: White Blood Cells Elephant Get Behind Me Satan De Stijl The White Stripes Icky Thump (I haven't really listened to it that much) So what are your thoughts?

Re: White Stripes
That's strange.
Icky Thump (6) The White Stripes (5) Elephant (2) Get Behind Me Satan (3) De Stijl (4) White Blood Cells (1) We're almost exactly opposite. Also, Jack uses crazy effects pedals to reach those lower octaves. Oh, and the White Stripes happen to be one of the best bands ever. The end. |

Anywho, while Jack White has some guitar chops (and it's a delight to hear him get better and better with the instrument as you listen to their discography), I really love the man because he, along with Ben Harper, are probably two of the most versatile rock musicians out there. The amount of styles and genres he covers or lets influence the songs he writes is astounding and a delight to my ears. White Blood Cells is easily my favourite, but sadly I've only really heard it and Elephant to make any serious calls. The way it would work is instead of buying another one of their albums I would just listen to Blood Cells, because it is too amazing. I also have Icky Thump now, but haven't given it enough listens, though I love it based on the few times I've let it spin.

I really need to re-listen to White Blood Cells, since I put a lot of faith into your musical taste, Galedeep.

Re: White Stripes
Honestly, there's only like 2 songs on White Blood Cells that I don't really like.

If you're going to talk about White Blood Cells, you really have to mention two tracks right off the bat. "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground," which still stands up as some of the best lyrics Jack White has penned in my mind, and has a crunchy intro to die for. Then of course, "Fell in Love With a Girl" likewise stands up as a brilliant bit of garage rock, no fuss no muss. Songs like "I'm Finding it Harder to Be a Gentleman" and "The Same Boy You've Always Known" show that Jack White has a unique take on the rock ballad. "Now Mary," "I Can't Wait" and "Offend in Every Way" are awesome because they have the soft verse with the loud chorus, and a clashing guitar and keys sound that come together to form awesome rock hooks. "Hotel Yorba" is just a foot-stomping whale of a good time, and "The Union Forever" is amazing if you're a film nerd, or just love Citizen Kane. "This Protector" has Meg and Jack Harmonizing. Nothing really more needs to be said. Really, I skip an average of three tracks on a sixteen track album. Every track I don't skip I consider to be gold. It's a lot more straight-forwards garage rock than Icky Thump, but it's still amazing.

Re: White Stripes
Yeah, I'm not to fond of "I Think I Smell a Rat," "Aluminum," and "Expecting." They're not bad, just not on par with the rest of the album.

Re: White Stripes
I only own Icky Thump by them, but I've heard a good bit of their other albums.
I do like them to an extent, Jack White is an excellent musician, and I love the range of styles he touches in his music. In fact, they'd be one of my favourite bands if it wasn't for Meg White, who really pisses me off.
