Alanis Morissette - Flavours of Entanglement

Well, at least she hasn't dissapointed with the album title.

Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, Under Rug Swept, So Called Chaos, Flavours of Entanglement. They're all so catchy...

So yeah, Alanis is releasing her first record in about four years. I'm actually really looking forward to hearing it, especially after So Called Chaos which really grew on me.

YouTube - Alanis Morissette - Underneath

As far as I know, that's going to be the single. What does everybody think of it?

As soon as I heard that Alanis was doing another album, I got excited because if there's one thing I know about Alanis, it's that she makes a killer break-up record. Since as far as I know this is the first record she's made after a big break-up since Jagged Little Pill, I was all pumped for that. Plus, it's got Guy Sigsworth working on it, which is awesome.

This first single isn't as spiteful as I was hoping it to sound, but I will more than likely give this album a fighting chance.

Oh no, I don't know if I could take another You Oughta Know.

Maybe I'm just an old-fashioned prude, but there comes a time where women really have to stop writing songs about public blowjobs. I am VERY conservative though. XD

I don't really want Alanis to go back to the greasy hair and banshee wailing. I'm enjoying watching her promote herself as Canada's spiritual leader. She's probably just making albums while she waits for an opening in the position of Dalai Lama.

She must get really tired of people asking when she's goint back to the h8rade.

Alanis interviews herself on her anger

LOL
If there was any justice in this world, we would be BFF.

Btw, how popular is Alanis in the motherland? I always thought that she like Canada's Princess Diana (or should that be St. Leona Lewis now?).

I don't really want her to step back into her past sound, but I was, am, hoping that this record will give new perspective on how she approaches her relationships and break-ups. I was pretty much assuming that it would have a big presence on the record because she was engaged and now is single. That's a pretty big influencing deal, right?

But yeah, she's way zen. It's really apparent in most of her interviews and such. Especially when she was on "Cribs" and was showing off her little meditation station and the like. I've also read from people that know her that she is the most zen person they know. Which is probably well and good to draw inspiration from to write from, but I'd still like some good old break-up songs.

How popular is she....hm. I think she's fairly popular, there isn't any of that animosity Canadians get towards a lot of their celebrity figures once they've been around for some time, so that's a plus. I think for the most part she gets attention when she has a record coming out, but then sort of vanished from the public eye while she's off doing other things. She hosted the Juno's a couple years ago, so I would say she is very much culturally relevant.

I'd say most people either like her or are indifferent to her. No haters that I've ever encountered.

She's probably more concerned with getting her mits on the Olympic torch that her own relationships.

I'm actually a little tired of hearing people drone on about their sex lives (or lack of) in songs. As much as I love Alanis, some of her songs can be very self-indulgent, especially when it comes to her relationship songs.

You're right though, and it's not fair of me to comment on songs purely on their lyrical themes. But I will anyway.

You never know, maybe there will be something on the album. When you play it backwards there's some hidden messages in there...

Don't buy Scarlet's album... Her movies suck... Woody Allen is a washed up pervert... Van Wilder is the work of Satan

Yeah, the cover of Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie has the Buddha's five precepts on the front!

That's one of the things that I really enjoy about her music. She seems to be very receptive to her environment and open to new ideas and experiences. As much as her music changes from album to album, so to does her writing, and you can hear all of these new ideas and concepts that she's picked up from her travels.

Jagged Little Pill is a pretty immature album, in that she plays the part of the scorned woman very well, which is really typical of adolescence. Rather than recognise your own faults, it's so much easier to project those insecurities onto other people. But then, with Supposed Former, she comes back as a more self-reflective person, and it's a much darker album for it. There's a lot of pathos in there, and she probably goes too far in smearing her own character, but you get a more balanced view in the later albums.

And on the topic of the new album: I've been listening to the new single, and a couple of other new tracks, pretty much constantly over the past few days.

Hope she goes on a proper tour to promote it.
