REM- Accelerate
YouTube - R.E.M. - Supernatural Superserious
As you may or may not know, R.E.M.'s follow-up to 2004's Around the Sun is coming out April 1st and I was wondering just what splash it makes with you--or lack thereof. As of now, just bcause I'm a fanboy, I'm Gonna DJ and Supernatural Superserious (the only songs I've heard of CD quality) have the spur of other REM CD's as opposed to mid-tempo bore-fests like The Ascent of Man and Leaving New York. Just a thread for the new CD and REM and general...oh and, they offer you the chance to remake the video...which sucks btw ![]() SUPERNATURALSUPERSERIOUS.COM |

R.E.M.
Go crazy, this an R.E.M. discussion thread.
I'll post more later, but I'm absorbing Accelerate as of now. BUY IT, dear sirs and sods. It is rock, not that electronica fodder that scared you away, it even insults 2004's around the sun (no caps for a reason kiddies) on Sing For the Submarine with a jab at Electron Blue ! [For the record, I love Electron Blue, and it one of the only songs I like from AtS] ![]() It's just too darn short!!! That is why I leave you, to continue spinning this sucker (I've had it for 2 hours and it's been played 4 times, ALL THE WAY THROUGH). It isn't revelountnary, nor near as good as anything prior to Reveal and Around the Sun, but easily is a lovely return to form. Download everything but Until the Day is Done (which is a drag ) |

I went ahead and merged this with the R.E.M. thread that isn't quite old enough to justify a new one yet. Carry on.

I like R.E.M.
Not their hugest fan, but I've got one of their Best Of albums (Can't remember what it's called right now. "In Time" or something), and there's some very good songs on there. Haven't bothered to listen to any of their newer material, I'll have to add it to my ever growing list of music I need to listen to.

In Time covers a very specific period of their career. There's stuff that came before and stuff that has come after. It's an excellent place to start, and is actually what got me into them all those years ago.

33.) E-Bow the Letter
32.) Find the River 31.) Fall on Me 30.) Low 29.) Shiny Happy People 28.) Daysleeper 27.) Supernatural Superserious 26.) Lotus 25.) Radio Song 24.) Animal 23.) The One I Love 22.) Band and Blame 21.) Stand 20.) Cuayhoga 19.) Accelerate 18.) I'm Gonna DJ 17.) Begin the Begin 16.) Ignoreland 15.) New Test Leper 14.) Orange Crush 13.) Walk Unafraid 12.) Bad Day 11.) The Great Beyond 10.) Everybody Hurts 9.) Finest Worksong 8.) Radio Free Europe [the Hib-Tone Version] 7.) Nightswimming 6.) Drive 5.) What's the Frequency, Kenneth? 4.) Imitation of Life 3.) Man on the Moon 2.) Losing my Religion 1.) Country Feedback These have to be the top R.E.M. songs. I couldn't do thirty flat...I just kept taking out and putting in stuff, and they have over 500 official tracks floating around (that I know of). Accelerate feels like a soundtrack to humnanity. Driving down the road to pay the electric bill with the windows up, there was a song for each passerby; it was zen like. To everyone who overlooks R.E.M. [for any reason] should pick them up. I always say that if you don't like R.E.M., you just haven't found the song that fits you. Quote:
![]() If I had to put their albums in any paticular order, it'd be: 1.) Automatic For the People 2.) Out of Time 3.) New Adventures in Hi-Fi 4.) Document 5.) Accelerate 6.) Monster 7.) Up 8.) Green 9.) Life's Rich Pageant 10.) Murmur 11.) Fables of Reconstuction 12.) Reckoning 13.) Reveal 14.) Around the Sun Last edited by Coma Black; 04-01-2008 at 06:22 PM. |

Good list of songs. "Country Feedback" wouldn't be my number one, but it'd be in the top five for sure. Great great tune.
I have to agree with you, R.E.M. is pretty versatile that there should be at least a couple songs that pretty much everybody should be able to enjoy. |

I think it's fairly humorous how one of the best REM tunes comes off what I consider their second worst album.

Reveal. Up was experimental, but noteworthy as far as I'm concerned.
Reveal, ugh. That has to be the most boring record I've ever heard in my life. I literally think I feel asleep listening to All the Way to Reno. ![]() But Imitation of Life is just an outstanding song, I dunno, it just doesn't fit the rest of the record. Anything they did after Hi-Fi was either really good or gut wrenching. |

I actually really like "All the Way to Reno." I'm a sucker for the bass line and the cycling vocals at the end. "Imitation of Life" is a great song, but I'm really not a fan of the bridge.

I'm okay on them, but I know very little of them other than what's in their singles.
It's kind of funny how at parties, when "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" comes on, everyone pretends to know all the words by heart; but really, other than the chorus, the only line anyone knows is "LEONARD BERNSTEIN!" and everyone feels the need to shout it out as loud as possible.

I know most of the lyrics and can keep up with Michael Stipe in "End of the World." Mostly because I learned them off of the Great Big Sea version, which is actually faster than the original. Go me!

It's one of my favorites, but I don't play it as often as others because of its lack of diversity. Sames goes for The One I Love.

The Great Beyond is probably my favourite R.E.M. song. Still haven't managed to listen to any more of their material (I've got a list of fifty or so bands I want to listen to...) but I heard an acoustic version of their latest single, and was sufficiently impressed. I'll listen to some more as soon as possible.
