Classic Rock

For those truly classical rock fans out there! Share your favorite songs.

Currently I'm obsessed with Heart and Scorpions. I haven't heard a song from any of them that I love. Their lyricists are amazing, their guitarists are on par with everything, and everything just clicks.

I also really like Led Zeppelin but not as much as Heart or Scorpions.

"Dream On" by Aerosmith and "Paint it Black" by The Rolling Stones are probably on my favorite songs of all time list.

Other honorable mentions that I really like are "Cover of the Rolling Stones" by Dr. Hook, "More than a Feeling" by Boston, "Pride and Joy" by Stevie Ray Vaughan, "Thunderstruck" by ACDC, and "Turn the Page" by Bob Segar.

Oh, and Tom Petty played really well at the Super Bowl this year.

Re: Classic Rock

No one has posted in this thread yet? For shame.

As for myself, I'm really into The Moody Blues and Jethro Tull right now. Though mostly I've been doing a little more expanding nowadays, finding one-hit-wonders and exploring their musical catalogue. The Bobby Fuller four are fantastic, as is Billy Joe Royal, Nazareth, Slade, Horslips, Wishbone Ash and The Georgia Satellites. From the 50's to the 80's was a great time for music.

Right now my favorite classic rock track is Jesus Just Left Chicago by ZZ Top. Great, often overlooked track from a phenomenal band. Also, I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock 'n Roll Band) by The Moody Blues is an all-time personal favorite.

I almost forgot to say all the bands you listed are awesome. I especially dig The Scorps, Heart, Tom Petty and The Stones.

Great stuff.

Re: Classic Rock

Motley Crue is classic? Hm, you learn something new every day.

I've basically never heard of almsot any of the bands you guys mentioned.

Man, watching Heart videos is something else. Ann and Nancy are extremely talented.

Ohhh, Black Dog by 'Zeppelin is an amazing song. My personal favorite of theirs is All of my Love.

Pink Floyd is good as well. Wish You Were here (thanks Aeternus ^_^) and Another Brick in the Wall are extremely well-known and great songs.

Rush is a good choice as well. You guys have good taste.

I love sharing bands with people. It makes me feel somehow important or influential. So let's do this thang:

The Moody Blues were one of the best bands to hop across the pond during the British Invasion. A bit on the progressive side, but they never got to the point where their music was entirely inaccessible to the general public. Best remembered for their long string of concept albums, of which they created seven, all of them built upon vastly differing subject matter. Brilliant band.

I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock 'n Roll Band)
Ride My See-Saw

Nazareth were a Scotish hard rock outfit that popped onto the scene sometime around the early 70's, and they still hold a very strong following amongst dedicated members today. Probably best remembered for their 'Hair of the Dog' album which included a stellar cover of 'Love Hurts'. Listen to their vocalist, MacCafferty. This guy was even asked to be the replacement vocalist for Bon Scott from AC/DC!

Razamanaz
Hair of the Dog

Apparently, Horslips is/was an Irish rock band whose roots were set heavily in folksongs and Irish jigs. I've just started listening to these guys, but they're turning out to be very promising indeed.

The Man Who Built America
Derag Doom

Slade were an English Glam setup who were hugely successful in their homeland, but never seemed to get any love in the States. Which is a damn shame, because much of their work is very listenable and well written. Many of their songs were subsequently covered by Quiet Riot in the 80's, which helped to boost their popularity a bit during that period. Great songwriting which sometimes suggests influence from Queen, not to mention Noddy Holder's fantastic vocal work.

Cum On Feel The Noize
We Won't Give In

The Georgia Satellites were a short-lived, but comparatively recent Southern Rock outfit from the mid 80's best remembered for their smash hit 'Keep Your Hands To Yourself'. They fell into obscurity shortly thereafter, but not before leaving us with a set of very good Southern Rock tracks, some of which shows flashes of brilliance along the lines of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Keep Your Hands To Yourself/Can't Stand The Pain

There are mountains of other artists out there to check out, so always try to be on the lookout for new bands. Expand your listening experience, because there is nothing more awesome than finding a brand new band all by yourself.

Re: Classic Rock

I really like some classic rock, some not so much. It's what my parents like to listen to, as its the music they grew up with, particularly my dad. So ever since I was...well, born, we'd listen to the classic rock radio station whenever we were in the car or in the house.

Because of that I know a lot of classic rock songs, but don't actually know the titles of the songs, or even the artist in a lot of cases. Starting around four years ago when I started listening to classic rock on my own I started to discover that many of the songs I liked for many many years were actually quite popular songs by quite popular bands. It was pretty interesting to finally but bands that I had heard of to the songs that I had been hearing for so many years.

Re: Classic Rock

I'm a classic rock junkie. I even spent $130 for a big collection of "Legends" with stuff from 1965-1980.
I like Steely dan (they're my favorite), jethro tull, Genesis (early genesis, before the 80's, but even that stuff isn't bad), and a lot of prog stuff like king crimson.
I don't think 80's rock is classic rock. i mean, it is "classic" in it's own right, but "classic rock" is more of the 60's and 70's stuff.

I also like led zep, boston, foreigner, clapton, beatles, Frank Zappa, Moody blues, stones, bob dylan, cat stevens, it goes on and on....

if it was written before i was born, I prolly like it!

But i HATE HATE HATE Nazareth. I've never heard a Nazareth song i liked. and I'm not big on ac/dc. zz top is about a 50-50 for me.

PS. I LOVE the scorps! still loving you is one of my favorite songs of all time *RIP Jason*

Twenty years ago, and it more or less sounds the same as the stuff from the '60s and '70s to my ears, so I will continue to define it as classic rock, but a lot of people don't and I'm OK with that.

The Beatles are my parent's favorites, they grew up with the fab four, and they love every single song from them. So I've acquired a taste for it as well.

That's almost a truism with classic rock, strange really.

Who doesn't? "No one like you" is one of my favorite songs, I'd almost say top ten.

is that sarcasm i hear? DUH! obviously all classic rock was written before i was born (except in your case, lumping 80's rock in there too, and i was born in '84 but I don't include 80's unless it was by a band that was already around before that, like van halen).

I was basically saying, if it's MUSIC of any sort, and was written before i was born, chances are I'll dig it. even the disco and soul and jazz.

Re: Classic Rock

Not sarcasm at all really. I was just kind of finding it funny that basically, if it was written after 1990, it kind of sucks. It's sad and strange.

That's not 100% true of course, but just kind of a weird fact.

Re: Classic Rock

Assuming that you're taking classic rock to mean most of the rock music from the mid 1960's to the later 1980's, then yes, I'm a huge fan of that music genre. Arguably, probably my favorite genre of music. Though that's quite debateable, as I listen to just about anything that makes me tap my toe.

I've been listening to Boston (Foreplay/Long Time! \m/) lately, along with some of the Allman Brothers. They're probably two bands that are some of my favorites, though they may not be quite as popular as The Doors, or Pink Floyd. I listen to them as well, of course.

Currently I'm actually listening to one of my favorite songs by Pink Floyd, "When the Tigers Broke Free"

oh yeah- floyd! I love floyd! and the allman bros and DOOBIE bros are awesome too...
I disagree about the stuff written after 1990 sucking. I like a LOT of music from the 90's, mostly the alternative music, like nirvana, weezer, ben folds five, POT USA, Spacehog, etc....

Re: Classic Rock

I was just going though my iTunes library just to look at the genre's. of 1018 songs about 400 were classic rock. The rest were a mix of Rock/Metal, Classical and Country.

Also. I cannot believe no one mentioned Styx in this thread yet.

DekuQueen, I love your taste in music!

Pink Floyd is a must, As Is the Rolling Stones.

And of course who could leave the Eagles out of it...

Jesus Christ dude... I don't even have 400 songs when you include every single one in the TP OST...

I've heard some of their stuff but I couldn't recognize it if I heard it now. I don't really know if they're that good or not.
