Post Rock
Post Rock is instrumental music that originated from Prog-Rock and Indie. It is basically the use of rock instruments for non-rock purposes. Some of it is very orchestral sounding, and other more chaotic and similar to Math Rock. The band Battles is a good example of Math Rock.
I'm just starting to get into this genre and my favorite bands are Explosions in the Sky and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Mogwai is another popular post rock band, but I haven't gotten into them. Anyone else interested in getting your hands on some PM me. So does anyone else listen to post rock? What do you think of it? |

Re: Post Rock
I got into post rock last year, starting with Mogwai's soundtrack to the film Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait. I followed that sort of more low-key sound with the more atmospheric The American Dollar and their self-titled release.
My friend then brought over his vinyl copy of Godspeed You! Black Emperor's F#a#∞ and I got a rip of that, and I quite enjoy it. I heard a leak of A Silver Mt. Zion's 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons and am probably going to get it when it comes out later this month. So I listen to a little bit of post rock. I've listened to some Explosions in the Sky as well, but don't have any albums by them. I tend to like the really low-key stuff or the more atmospheric bright stuff.

Re: Post Rock
GYBE are fantastic, and I need more by A Silver Mt. Zion as I only have the debut. Do Make Say Think are awesome too, and when I'm in the mood for Sigur Ros it's always a really emo moment. Mogwai and Explosions are good, but never blew away like the other bands I mentioned.
Isis and Pelican are both "Post-Metal." I only have City of Echoes by Pelican, it's good but apparently the older stuff is even better. Isis are awesome, I have Oceanic, Panopticon, and In the Absence of Truth, really atmospheric and heavy, which generally don't go together (In the Woods... also comes to mind but they're more extreme metal). |

Re: Post Rock
The new Silver Mt. Zion is amazing, you should check it out.
I'm a big fan of ISIS, Panopticon gets a lot of play on my mp3 player when I'm on long trips. Rosetta is another almost post-metal type band, their album Wake/Lift is one of my favourites from last year.
