Re: Metal!!!

I'm listening to ISIS right now, which is the kind of metal I listen to. More atmospheric stuff, I guess. My small metal collection consists of ISIS, Rosetta, Buried Inside, and The Ocean. I really really love The Ocean's Precambrian, especially the second half. Probably one of my favourite releases of last year.

TSoP just might be my all time favorite Death album; it's a very hard choice.

Uh, no it isn't even remotely an attempt to sound like Death. The rhythm section is completely different opting for a far less thrashy style, one that is far more melodically upfront, far more intricate, etc. The vocals, while similar, are not even remotely 'stolen' from Death either. Chuck's vocals are more or less just there for intensity purposes whereas - much like in the case of Luc Lemay's vocals, Tomas Lindberg uses his to express a sense of agony and tortured feeling. It is perhaps the most nuanced album in all of death metal this side of Obscura.

Honestly, you've got a very respectable opinion on all things metal so I don't get how you're this blatantly ignorant of the album it is almost to the point where I'd be willing to say you've never heard it. However I know that isn't the case, so I just suggest that you listen to it and maybe pay more attention next time because it is nothing like early Death material.

As far as Death goes anyways I think they're an absolutely mediocre band who really do not deserve the praise they get. I hate their latter material, especially TSoP (especially the bass work on it, something about the bass on that album always, literally, gives me a headache) and find their works prior to Human to be merely decent.

Not to sound like an elitist purist prick but Chuck really is only good while in the hands of more capable musicians like Rick Rozz and Kam Lee - because his work with Mantas was absolutely ****ing stellar.

Re: Metal!!!

Older Korn wasn't bad, but these day's? meh.
(Sadida will kill me for that statement ._. )
As for me? I prefer Heavy, power and thrash metal. mostly the older stuff, but some new stuff tends to appeal to me as well. But then again, i can listen to A LOT of different music.

I can't believe you consider Rick Rozz more capable than Chuck; the man is easily the worst player to ever play on a Death album lol. He's basically using the Kerry King method, just chromatic shredding with dive bombs and flutters every other measure. Massacre is a joke as well; I purchases every album in hopes to see something good, and I got nothing more than an average death metal band.

While I respect your opinion about Death, just like everyone else's opinions on this board (kudos for mentioning Luc ), I just have to say that Death is by far my all time favorite metal band. Chuck has reached me musically and intellectually on a level that many have failed, and he is my reason for playing music and being in a band, trying to make it.

Now, has anyone other than CrushedHope and Ogmios22188 listened to "Obscura"?

I'll grant you that I may have been a bit quick in deeming the album as plagiarism. It was not a conclusion drawn from in-depth analysis. I will, however, still maintain that I hear quite a lot of Death influence on there.

As far as Death goes, I'll agree with you that they are overrated, but I still find most of their work to be far better than just decent. Symbolic remains in my top-ten death metal albums of all time.

EDIT: By the way, Obscura's (the band) cover of Lack of Comprehension is pretty awesome.

Re: Metal!!!

Lol Obscura does rule, but I was referring to Gorguts' masterpiece of an album.

I must admit I don't care much for Gorguts. And I haven't knowingly listened to the album. And the Obscura note of mine was basically just a side note that I was reminded of when we/you were talking about the Obscura album and Death. Most of what Obscura have made otherwise is pretty mediocre.

Massacre's From Beyond has a far more vicious riffing style as well as far better vocals than any Death album. I honestly don't care about them beyond that, but I still quite like the Mantas work anyways.

Anyways, yes. Opinions are to be respected, I suppose, even if I'm not a fan of accepting others' as valid

But eh, I don't think that it can be legitimately said that any of Death's work after Human was even death metal with the exception of perhaps ITP. It is really just a tech. thrash version of the Cynic demos.

Anyways, Alf Svensson is pretty much death metal incarnate.

Re: Metal!!!

ITP is technical progressive metal, as is the rest of Death's discography after that point; how is that anything like Cynic? They are jazz/fusion.

No, they're not. I was referring to their demo works, which it seems you've never heard.

Re: Metal!!!

Aldhissla, ErosionOfSanity, and CrushedHope, watching your exchange is like watching Conan O'Brien when him and Max do the "small talk moment" and they get all rediculously detailed and technical, then one pwns the other and they do the big "ASS" stamp on the forehead
I have no idea what you're talking about, but it makes me smile!
anyway- galedeep, I saw ISIS open for Tool and I was SO bored I was praying for it to end. it's probably cuz I had never heard their music before, but I just remember dislikeing everything i heard. i was trying to listen for something I could dig, but it never happened... maybe if i heard an album...

oh, and I must say, I kinda dig Kreator. I'm not too big into metal, and can only dig it in small doses, but I do enjoy it from time to time. I also really really like Opeth. my b/f gets to go see dream theater and opeth together!!! (so jealous, but i don't have a spare 60 bucks lying around).

anyone ever heard killswitch engage's cover of holy diver? kinda good, but kinda weird/cheesey/disturbing at the same time.

I also thought A7X's City of Evil album was pretty good, but all the new stuff I've heard is ASS
