Nine Inch Nails

I've been wondering this for a long time.

My step-uncle (or whatever you call it) happens to listen to this band. My mom had me go with her to the place where she's living right now (which happens to be my step-grandmother/father's house). So in my room, there happens to be a Nine Inch Nails DVD on my dresser (which is my step-uncle's). She tells me not to listen to it. I didn't ask why, I just said "OK."

What is wrong with this band to make it where I wouldn't be allowed to listen to them? Because she lets me listen to Metallica and A7X, which I'm sure are both just as bad if not worse than Nine Inch Nails.

By your profile I assume you're actually 11 years old. If you ask me, parents are very over-protective of their kids when it comes to music nowadays, and I'm guessing that she doesn't want you to listen to them because of their overall theme (i.e. gothic and the like). I know it makes no sense, but neither does your mom in this case.

Nine Inch Nails has a good beat to them, so what's not to like?

she's okay with you listening to Metallica and Avenged? Well, NIN has some explicit content, but it's really not THAT bad. I don't see why you should be able to listen to Metallica and A7X but not NIN.
Oh, and I don't know if you know this or not, but NIN is just one guy. I believe his name is Trent Reznor. One-man band. If I recall correctly, he also did the music for War Craft I. Very talented.

Yeah, most Industrial Rock bands are only one man. So far, I haven't heard any bad ones. I think all Industrial Rock artists are talented.

Trent Renzor is the only consistant member of NIN. He writes the songs and finds people to do the instramentals. I would say you're safe as long as you dont watch there music videos. NIN rocks

Wow, I'm thirteen and have listened to so many bad (cuss) rock songs when I was was eleven, it's not funny. NIN is a pretty good band. I'd ask her why she doesn't let you, or find a bleeped version or something.

Evanescence is gothic (I think), and I listen to them.

Evanescence is also usually pretty clean lyrically and for a while were marketed as a Christian band, so I wouldn't exactly consider them to be a standard for what music you should be allowed to listen too

Evanescence is indeed a Christian Rock band.

On the side of Nine Inch Nails, I was an obsessive fan of theirs for a long time, having every CD they have released, I have to say they are possibly one of the best bands I have ever gotten in to. Your mother was probably trying to keep you away from one of their most popular songs; "Closer" which has explicit themes to it.

^ I think we were separated at birth. o: Nine Inch Nails is indeed a terrific band. The video for "Closer" is one of my all time favorites.

Hmmm...are you sure she's not saying [she thinks] they suck?

The only forboding thing about them is profanity and that they have some pretty hopeless and depressing themes in their music. If profane content be the case, I think that Metallica (who used to have songs that sarcastically praised murder) and A7X (who, try as they might to conceal it, defame organized religion) are almost, if not a little less, as damaging as Trent Reznor.

they have a lot of anti-religious themes to them, and also explicit lyrics, but honestly- I started listening to NIN when I was exactly your age- wait, no I was younger. I was 9 or 10. I've liked NIN for a long time, and I think the only reason she told you to stay away from it is cuz it's a DVD and probably has sexual themes, or violence, or just over-all disturbing content (the video for closer used to CREEP me out as a kid. didn't stop me from liking them, though). I'm talking pig heads on a stick and weird gross/creepy "goth" (although I hate calling it that) stuff.

I say you should wait til she's not home and TOTALLY watch it

I know that's a bad thing to tell a kid but seriously- i was the same age when I saw this stuff and it didn't ruin me. if anything, the music i listened to at that tender age helped shape who I am now, and trent reznor is very intelligent.
hey, a young person discovering the world should be exposed to this stuff eventually, if only for objectivity's sake

Did you know he's bipolar? It's even noticeable in his music. Also for CDs he plays all the instruments then edits all the songs together. Only durring conserts do other musicians play with him and it's never the same people. He truely is an accomplished artist.

Yeah, I think the lyrics of he song 'closer' pretty much would be a reason why she wouldn't want you to listen to them. :]

I love the sick and twisted feel of the song, and the lyrics appeal to my crazy psycho side that I keep so well hidden. Oh, and the beat is awesome too.

Edit:
Here's awesome music by NIN that doesn't feature any lyrics: YouTube - Just Like You Imagined - Nine Inch Nails (300 Soundtrack)

They may never have claimed to be a Christian band [which is the worst term ever...Christian is NOT a genre and a band can't be Christian...people can. but I digress] but they were marketed as such at one point.

That is true and I know that completely, but we were responding to the statement that they actually are one, which is utterly false.

Oh and I guess I should contribute to the actual thread...Nine Inch Nails ROCK, but I agree that an eleven year old should not listen to them. Seriously. Some songs are OK, but some songs are just way too maturely themed for someone who is eleven. Thirteen, maybe not so much, but 11 is cutting it way short.

Nine Inch Nails make some of the best... well "alternative" is the only word that springs to my mind in terms of what music they produce.

A lot of the music is very emotionally driven, some of it is just explicit. For example, as someone has already mentioned, Closer is not exactly a song for birthday parties, and Big Man with a Gun is a song in similar context.

If you're Christian then you may not appreciate Heresy.

Evanescence were never really a christian rock band, they were just christians who play rock music.

If I recall correctly, they were sometimes called one in the media until Ben Moody swore in an interview. Or something. I was a fangirl for about 4 years but my interest had diminished

And.. I have never heard NIN! I might do that now actually.

Never heard NIN??? That's a sin!
Trent is the best one man band out there.

I suggest you check out the songs Head Like a Hole [best song ever to come out of the 80s] and Hand that Feeds..
