Re: The Dethalbum
Whats so terrible about making fun of black metal? (Note, I use black as an adjective for heavy, as it's used in the show. It has nothing to do with color)
I find it catchy. |

Re: The Dethalbum
I have a friend who's been obsessing over this to no end. I just youtube'd it, since it's all on there, apparently, and I don't get it. Like, it's listen-able, I guess, but I don't get it... and it's really not living up to all the hype. I was expecting something of epic proportions musically speaking. There's some catchy riffs and solos, but nothing is blowing my mind. :p
I don't watch TV. At all, save for lolfansubs of anime, so... maybe I'd need to see the show for this to be exciting for me. Ah well. |

Re: The Dethalbum
It's not so much that I mind the fact that it parodies metal, but that it does so in a very poor way. Seriously, don't you have better things to spend your money on? It's the same thing as people who buy Weird Al's albums. If you enjoy listening to the songs, then... aren't you also more or less saying you enjoy the originals? If that's the case then why are you even buying the parody at all? Oh, such juicy irony!
Just a correction: Dethklok doesn't parody black metal, but rather sort of amalgamates various sub-genres of metal, most notably death metal (due to the ineptly-performed growling and downtuned guitars). I am quite aware that black metal has absolutely nothing to do with colour; the fact that you're using it as an "adjective for heavy" makes it quite clear you have no idea what you're actually talking about, anyway. |

Re: The Dethalbum
The fact that I have no idea what I'm talking about is irrelevant. Unless we're talking about Dethklok, then it's completely relevant.
But honestly, it's funny if you just take the time to listen to it. There are some pretty awesome pieces on the album. |

Re: The Dethalbum
I actually watch Metapocolypse on occasions just for the novelty of it, and because I have nothing else to do. The show is OK but Dethklok's music blows pretty hard. I listened to some of the crap on the album and yeah...I'm not buying it. The only way I'll ever own it is if someone just gives it to me for free.

Re: The Dethalbum
I enjoy death metal as much as I enjoy how much of a joke Dethklok makes of the music, seeing as every musical genre has cliches and death metal is full of them. Still doesn't stop me from enjoying the music though.
That's not even an irony, because people love to see parodies of things they hate as well, because if they are going to hate something they may as well laugh at it. Same goes with music.

Re: The Dethalbum
Sea, I have to disagree with that Weird Al thing. Take for example the song Ridin' Dirty or whatever. It's a horrible, generic rap song. However, the parody White and Nerdy is hilarious due to the clever lyrics and such.
That said I like Metapocolypse for the novelty; but Dethklok is pretty bad.

Re: The Dethalbum
Exactly, as they should be. The point is not for them to sound good, but for them to poke fun of the stereotypes of metal (death metal in particular), which they do a pretty good job with. But just like "parodies", I just can't justify buying it. Sure, it makes me laugh myself silly, but it's still awful once the novelty wears off. That's why I never have bought a Weird Al CD, for that very same reason. It's amusing a few times through, but utterly not worth the purchase. However, I will admit that the Duncan Hills Coffee song never gets old.

Re: The Dethalbum
I feel completely confident in myself when I say that those who watch Metapocolypse and enjoy Dethklok are the very people who are causing the utter decay of artistic merit in metal. They perpetuate this idea that all a band has to do is create simple catchy music in order to appeal to "metal fans" when if you look through the evolution of metal as a genre you'll notice it always went to more complex forms (Black metal may seem to break this, but I am not speaking in terms of technicality.)
Why is this? The fans grew to desire something more, the bands grew to desire something more and what we got was this break off from the real world centric heavy metal and thrash to the abstract and surreal with death and black metal. It is VERY clear that the fans of metal, the real ones who honestly care about the music, do not desire this overdone simplicity. Too often today the bands focus far too much on what the "radio metal fans" want ... and in effect you get **** like Cradle of Filth, Amon Amarth, and Trivium. Perhaps I look into things too deep, but I can't help but do so when it involves that which is so dear to me.

Metalocalypse is just a cartoon poking fun at metal, which i enjoy as a matter of fact. And Dethklok, hell they're not even meant as a serious band, they're freaking cartoon characters for **** sake, you and sea both just need to loosed up and not take every damn thing which might even remotely be insulting "real metal" so goddamn serious.

Re: The Dethalbum
It isn't remotely because it is taking a jab at metal, I for instance love Nanowar and they do an excellent job parodying metal. It is because it continues to keep metal from being able to be taken seriously by anyone.
It is a shame when the artistic efforts of bands such as Darkthrone, Burzum, Bathory, Sodom, Sabbat, Demigod, Carnage, etc will never be recognized and appreciated while the works of some guy taking a jab at metal is hailed as great by the overall population. It is a grand reflection of the mindset of this modern world, banality before purpose.

Re: The Dethalbum
Pff, i wouldnt want everyone and their mothers to listen to metal, and thats basically what you're saying.
The way it is now, the people that actually listen to metal tend to be at least people who actually think and look for what they're listening to, in stead of listening to what's being shoved down their throat by **** like MTV. I might have more to add once its quieter in here (people barging in annoys me)

Re: The Dethalbum
It isn't so much that I want everyone to listen to metal, it is just my disdain for those who don't seek to understand. I know that not everyone will see the pure genius in Burzum or Darkthrone, and I don't expect them too - it just makes me angry to see that which I hold as so important to me getting such an awful reputation due to such shows as this and bands like Amon Amarth and Trivium.
