Favorite Vocalist of all Time

I made a thread of this awhile back and it seems like and interesting enough topic.

I personally think that Layne Staley had the most killer voice of all time. His voice was just so powerful. I also have to say that Axl Rose has a pretty killer voice.

So who is you're favorite vocalist of all time?

Re: Favorite Vocalist of all Time

I would have to say Freddie Mercury.
He had a wonderful voice, and he could hit some very high notes for a male.

Amy Lee, Sharon den Adel, Axl Rose, and Tarja all have great voices as well.

I never thought I'd read that outside of a GN'R forum. While he might not be the best, he's definitely my favorite vocalist as well as song writer of all time.

I would agree in the sense that his voice makes me want to kill. Myself. But that's just me

I have a lot of favourites, because I listen to a lot of music. In no particular order:
William Beckett of The Academy Is...
On their first full-length he really shows off a rich tone and carrying voice. The second release sadly doesn't showcase it as much.

Ola Salo of The Ark
Likewise has an excellent tone, and his voice is pretty much perfect for the music the band plays.

Steven Page and Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies
Steve just has a really powerful, really wide-ranged voice. Ed can harmonize with pretty much anything and has a range he doesn't really show off enough, as well as being more than capable on his own as a lead vocalist.

Jesse Lacey of Brand New
Nothing spectacular technically, but is amazing at emoting through his voice, matched perfectly with the lyrics to really drive a song home. Also a pretty solid screamer.

Christina Aguilera
Easily one of the best young vocalists right now. She got out of the pop princess confines and has really established herself based on her ability to sing.

David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash
Perfected the art of harmony. I can't resist a good harmony, and these guys do nothing but good harmony.

Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea
Has a voice that can certainly sing a soft ballad, but sounds best when belting out a rapid-paced, acoustic-guitar driven song. His voice actually just makes you want to dance.

Imogen Heap (of Frou Frou or solo)
In my opinion, the most technically proficient vocalist around today. A clear tone, an unbelieveable range. The ability to use her own voice as an instrument when synthed just adds to my awe of her ability. Simply amazing.

Marvin Gaye
All modern R&B artists should learn something from Marvin Gaye. There's a man who knew how to sing Rhythm and Blues.

Justin Pierre of Motion City Soundtrack
A really nice high falsetto and a moderate higher range. Not the best on this list, but his voice just has something to it that I love.

Hayley Williams of Paramore
Eighteen years old and a set of vocal chords that blow me away. I'm really looking forwards to when she's older and can write a little better material (not that there's anything particularly wrong with what she writes now). Not a particularly wide range, but a really nice and clear tone, and lot of power behind it.

Freddie Mercury of Queen
Probably the greatest vocalist and front man of all time. Charisma and stage presence aside, the man had a nine octive range, rich tone, and power and carrying ability. Nothing more needs to be said.

Michael Stipe of R.E.M.
Not a great voice technically (other than having quite a high register and pretty good range overall) but probably one of the best at emoting.

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel
Simon gets a lot of due credit. Art gets ignored too much. He's an excellent harmonizer, but has such a powerful voice all on his own. The man sung "Bridge Over Troubled Water" for chrissakes.

That just about covers all my favourites. Probably too many.

Freedie Merucry of Queen- I don't give a damn if the man was gay, he was an awesome vocalist and performer!

The lead singer of Flyleaf- She's pretty damn good herself!

Dave Mustanie- He's a good metal vocalist and he can d some preety good vocies.

Steven Tyler-Another of my favorite vocalist.

I forgot to mention Michael Jackson. I don't care how sick that man is, but he had a really good voice.

Re: Favorite Vocalist of all Time

Right now I've been really digging David Lee Roth, Kevin DuBrow, Meat Loaf, Grace Slick, and Linda Ronstadt.

As far as vocals go, I'm terribly ignorant. I pretty much just go by what I like.

Re: Favorite Vocalist of all Time

I'd have to say I like Anthony Kiedis's vocals, although if I'm going to be honest, it hasn't really been technically good until this latest release. His singing in RHCP's early career sucked. I still love it though.
I also like Serj Tankian's vocals. Hard to describe why, seeing as how he's not really that fantastic by most standards.
Then there's Michael Jackson. What can I say? I have a lot of respect for the man. I mean, his personal life really doesn't matter to me.

Chester sounds like a whining baby. I forgot to mention him in my Worst Vocalists post.

The best vocalist will always be Chris Connell. The man has an incredible range and his voice is still powerful through all the years. Honorable mentions goes to Maynard James Keenan of Tool, Sting of The Police, Layne Staley of Alice in Chains, Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth for having a superb ablity to play clean and growling vocals with ease, and Freddy Mercury of Queen.

Re: Favorite Vocalist of all Time

YES on Serj Tankian. He has an amazing voice. I'm given the chills everytime he sings softly and whispers "so up high" in "Aerials." I love him in all SOAD's songs. And yes, even in "Vicinity of Obscenity." He's wonderful.

My favorite vocalist is Amy Lee. She has a beautiful voice and writes good music from the heart.

Some other good vocalists are Sharon den Adel of Within Temptation, Tarja Turunen formerly of Nightwish (Anette's nice too) as well as Marco Hietala (listen to him on "While Your Lips Are Still Red"—he's amazing), Freddy Mercury...

The Demon of Screamin' - Steven Tyler.

Probably not the best in everyone's books, but he's my personal favorite. I like how he can sync perfectly with the rest of the band.

Of the new generation, definitely Christina Aguilera. I'm not a huge fan of her work, but she definitely has a powerful voice.
