Covers that better the Original

List some covers that you think are better than the original version of that song.

I'll start; Nonpoint's cover of 'In The Air Tonight' is much better than the Phil Collins original.

Nonpoint - 'In The Air Tonight'

I love what they did with the drums for their cover.

I will say that every single cover of various Slayer songs that I've heard have been better than the originals in every way.

When Johnny Cash Covered Hurt originally done by Nine Inch Nails.

EDIT: I'd also like to add that I perferred Pantera's Planet Caravan over Black Sabbaths.

I have to disagree. That cover made me want to cry, it butchered the beauty and subtlety of the original.

I would agree with two already mentioned here though. Cash's cover of "Hurt" and Jules' cover of "Mad World" are indeed better than the originals, I find.

I can't actually think of many covers that are actually better than the originals other than those two though. I can think of ones that are just as good, but not better. One that I can think of is I find Great Big Sea's cover of R.E.M.'s "End of the World" is better. More franticly paced, more instrumentally fun. At least I find it to be.

Indeed. Although I personally like Alex Parks' version even better.

"Thoughtless", originally by KoRn and covered by Evanescence.

That's all I can think of, at the moment.

Re: Covers that better the Original

Jimi Hendrix's cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watch Tower" was better than the original. In every way.

I also like Van Halen's cover of "You Really Got Me", which was originally by The Kinks.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of the band, I like Nirvana's cover of the David Bowie song "The Man Who Sold the World".

I'll agree that it took away the mysterious feeling of the original, but it more than makes up for it with the new instrumentation, especially the drums. Each to their own I suppose.

Re: Covers that better the Original

One of my favorite covers of all time is John 5's cover of Welcome to The Jungle(Guns 'n Roses). Since John 5 is only a guitarist, he made the cover an instrumental, and instead of Axl's voice, you hear a guitar solo replacing it. It is amazing.

I agree, Jimi put more of an emotional blues into it than Dylan did.

I like Metallica's cover of "Astronomy" more so than I do the original by Blue Oyster Cult. More emotional and mysterious than the original,

I liked Green Day's and U2's cover of The Saints Are Coming.

But I'm probably alone on that. >_>
