Best Guitar Player of All Time?

Who do you think is the best guitar player of all time?

Steve Vai: He is the most awesome guitarist of all time! He has so many styles that I like from him. His music can make a guy like me cry sometimes.

John Petrucci.

Dream Theater's fabulous guitarist.
He's, in a particular way, a God to me.

Jimi Hendrix? The man was great, yes but he basically did things to the electric guitar that nobody else did back in the day. John Petrucci, while he is pretty amazing, most of his solos are technical wankery that may sound cool, but lack emotion. Yngwie Malemsteen puts more emotion in his solos then Petrucci does.

Can't really have much of a say but Steve Vai, Carlos Santana, and Muhamed Scuimez are some of the most talented, emotional guitarists out there.

Well For me Synyster Gates, Although he isn't as good as some guitarists you named I still think he rocks.

Jimi Hendrix was a guitar god.
I also like Jimmy Page and Carlos Santana.

There are many great guitarists out there; I think it's too hard to pick just one.

Hendrix, Santana and Vai are all gods.

They are not the greatest but Kirk and James from Metallica are damn good.
Tom Morello is underrated, and so is Tommy Iommi.

Brian May of Queen is a great guitarist.

I've really been diggin' Paul Gilbert lately. He's amazingly techincal, not to mention I can listen to a lot more of him works than anyone mentioned in this thread without getting bored.

Jimi Hendrix could create a whole new song if he mesed up live. God.

Really? I don't think there is much emotion at all in Malmsteen's playing. He certainly does not beat Petrucci in emotional playing, all though the both lack in the area...not that that is a bad thing, I love technical stuff.

Joni Mitchell. Not only is she technically fantastic, but she has been extremely innovative with tunings.

And her songwriting makes her performance seem that much better.

Nobody's mentioned Buckethead (Brian Carroll)? One listen to the solo in the studio version of his song Jordan, and I knew he was a God. I've been hooked on his music ever since. Great stuff.

If you mean in techinicl skill, it has been done many times, If you mean in innovation in his time, then you are right. Guitar players are running out of room to be truly innovative anymore.
