Classical music

"Classical music" can have a few definitions. To some, classical music is music from the classical period (1750 - 1827) only. To others, it encompasses music from baroque (1600 - 1750) to the twentieth century - essentially, "high-class" European music. I refer to "classical music" as non-popular/folk music - music that is better known by its composer than its performer(s).

My music playlist is organised by composer rather than artist, and I refer to them as "pieces", as opposed to "songs". The majority are pieces from film scores. My favourite composer is Harry Gregson-Williams, and my favourite works of his are the Shreks (Shrek was done with John Powell, Shrek 2 was Harry G-W solo) and Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas soundtracks. While I enjoy the "old" classical music, I prefer modern ones. But I've always wondered: Do you think film music is considered as classical music?

Do you like classical music? Do you think classical music is boring? Please share your thoughts on classical music, and perhaps include what your definition of it is.

Re: Classical music

It's calm and soothing, but I don't listen to it often.

Re: Classical music

I sometimes listen to classical just because I feel like feeling sophisticated and what not. Not what I listen to every day though...

Re: Classical music

When my jazz station was taken away, I turned to the welcoming Classical Music station. Some jazz can be classical too though...
I love Classical music, it's all I listen to in the car. It's nice, soothing, cheery, and inspirational to me... and that's important in my life.

Some film music is classical music to me, like the music in Lord of the Rings. When I hear "Classical", I don't think of it being old, I think of it as a genuine piece of art composed from feelings. I get certain feelings from different pieces, new or old, they are still classical to me. The music in the Lord of the Rings is classical, in that it was composed to set feelings by an orchestra/choir. That is just how I feel about it... Am I making sense to anyone?

Re: Classical music

I always thought the very broad term of classical included Medieval and Renaissance, and early contemporary (Shoenberg, Stravinsky, etc).

I really enjoy such music, anyway. I particularly enjoy Bach, Beethoven, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, Moussorgsky, and Holst.

I think of film music as neo-classical (though it's really in a romantic style. I like Howard Shore ).

Re: Classical music

I LOVE classical music, so peacful, so calming, but after I listen to it after a while or when I'm REALLY hyper I don't like it and it gets really boring. *yawns* It's still great to listen to though.

So yes I love it but I also like other kinds of music you can bob your head and go crazy too. WHOOT!!!

ROCK ON, RIMSKY-KORSAKOV!

I absolutely LOVE classical music. Particularly Russian classical music, it just doesn't get any better than Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, I tell you! Oh, but that's forgetting about Sibelius, Beethoven, Holst, and...eh, forget I said anything about those Russians! They're all awesome! I never really liked Mozart's stuff though. His operas are awesome, and some of his piano solos were nice, but I never could really get into his symphonies or chamber music.

To listen to classical music, though, you sort of have to commit yourself to it. Most of it, anyway. It's not like you can just ignore the musicality of it and get caught up in a thumping bassline or anything, you know? I find that when I listen to classical music while reading or something it's hard to concentrate on the book. Classical music while driving, on the other hand, is a feeling beyond comphare!

I just can't stand it when people are like "Oh, classical music, sure, I listen to that to put myself to sleep!" No offense to any of you guys (I noticed a couple of people saying that classical music was only soothing and calming.) but it seems that whenever someone like that is confronted with some lively, or very emotional classical work, they are frightened and somewhat offended by it. Which sort of ticks me off, because my favorite part of classical music is when it's passionate... Oh well.

By the way, I define classical music as pretty much any of the "classical" categories, just because I don't feel like going "This isn't classical music! This is ROMANTIC!" or "BAROQUE, dummy!" all the time.

Oh, man, I say that all the time to people. I'm not sure why I do, because half the time they already know as well as I do. It's just hard to talk about the classical period when people thing you're talking about basically all music from before 1900.

Re: Classical music

I like "classical music," so to speak. Maybe the better phrase I'm expressing is "orchestrated music"? Classical music, in the strictest sense isn't bad. It sure beats Baroque music. But I digress.

I'm kind of a band geek, so I love a good, exciting band piece. I like a lot of the newer compositions that's coming out. Eric Whitacre's stuff is pretty good, I think.

Some Faves
Noisy Wheels of Joy - Whitacre
October - Whitacre
Suite of Old American Dances - Bennett
Symphonic Overture - Barnes
Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night - Del Borgo

Soundtracks are OK, but I haven't listened to many. The soundtrack for "Gladiator" had some pretty powerful stuff though.

Re: Classical music

I don't listen to it reguarly. I think it's pretty neat choice. Most of the orchestrated tracks I find in movies are always so inspiring and such. John Williams, erm-- ah, I can't remember anybody else on top of my head. But pretty good stuff-- I guess I could use Lord of the Rings as a good example. Well, I'm sure that it's classical music-- I don't know what else to classify it is. But yeah, that's my view on it.

Re: Classical music

I like classical music, especially classical remakes of video game music. Maybe it's just the music you love being so much better, but I love it.

Re: Classical music

I find it soothing...but for some reason, I find Marilyn Manson to be EVEN MORE relaxing. I have no bit with classical...but oldies chap my ass. Elvis for example, was a revoulution, so was Ziggy Stardust. They didn't have good sound though...yeah Marilyn did copy Stardust's image, but sounds nothing like him. Just line up and orchestra, and thou shalt forget all anger and malice.

Re: Classical music

No offense to anyone, but I really don't like today's type of music. All I ever listen to is classical, movie soundtracks, anime music, and gaming music. That's why I'll be so excited if Koji Kondo does all orchestrated music for TP!! Anyway, I love classical music composers like Beethoven, Stravinsky of course, and any composer that composes music for organs or harpsichords! My favourite classical instruments are trumpet (yay!), French horn, organ, harpsichord, and string bass! Thanks for reading this post!! Go classical music!!
