"Underground" Bands

How many of you listen to "underground" bands? That is, the bands that not many people know about, otherwise best known as not-mainstream. A friend of mine listens to some underground bands, named a few for me and I had no idea what the heck she was talking about.

In the words of an online comic I was reading awhile back, it's a lot like choosing a different flavor of ice-cream. There are more flavors other than Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry. Ever heard of Rocky Road? Moose Track Mint? Pinapple Cranberry Medley?

Probably not, but in the music sense, ignoring the metaphor, how many of you listen to these "underground" bands?

I can assure you the majority of what I listen to is a mystery to 95+% of the world's population.

The occasionaly In Flames or Shadow's Fall song. That's about it. Ska isn't too popular and I listen to that.

Yeah- I like this group called Element X- not known overseas and known by a few where I live. They're awesome.

Re: "Underground" Bands

Do local bands count?

Seriously though, I've been known to listen to some. My knowledge of their exsistence mainly owes to the fact that a good friend of mine listens to a sizable amount of underground Christian rockers(he despises anything remotely mainstream so it appears). I'm not sure I know too many of them by name but I remember Hangnail and Smithsfield being among them. My main taste lies a little beyond that, but I do listen to stuff on the alternetive side, lesser known bands. B-grade bands, if you will.

Yeah, Anaal Nathrakh, Incinerate, Necrophagia, The Berzerker (kind of underground), Zyklon

Most people I know have not even heard any type of music like what I listen to.

Re: "Underground" Bands

Wow, I had no idea so many people listened to these, underground bands.

If possible, I would love to know where you could find the music of all these underground bands. As I am getting sick of chocolate ice cream and would love to try new flavors.

I'm glad that ZU is somewhat less shallow than what it seemed.

Most of the music I listen to is not "mainstream" but not "underground." Some progressive rock bands I listen to are pretty underground, though.

Is Rick James underground? I'm not sure if he is. If he is, yes I listen to some underground music.

I've never met anyone who has heard of Bent, Alabama 3, or Fluke before. It's really a shame.

Most of the music I listen to is in the genre of 'trip hop' and I don't know anyone around where I live who really knows about them...although I'm not sure if they are popular anywhere else

If you're thinking of bands such as "Gorillaz", which I think are trip-hop, then no, not underground at all.

I do know of one very popular underground band among my peers, "Death Cab for Cutie".

Re: "Underground" Bands

Well, I'm not exactly sure if these are underground bands but I recently only heard of them and I love them . Everyone I know has not heard of them: Dredg, Chemical Brothers, Kittie, M.I.A., Harvy Dangerfield, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Re: "Underground" Bands

The Chemical Brothers are popular enough. They have four number one albums in the UK. I wouldn't say that's very underground. Dredg isn't too known of, but isn't underground as far as I know. Kittie is in the same case. Eh-- I don't think any of these bands are underground.

Re: "Underground" Bands

The problem with a lot of people is that if something isn't played on the radio then they think it's suddenly underground. Some guy at my school thought Iced Earth was the most unknown band ever, to give an example. Now Xasthur, that's underground.
