R. Kelly - songwriting genius?

Apparently not. Here's his latest, a concept album revolving around a man waking up with a woman other than his wife and the problems it causes, deemed as an instant classic by hip-hop fans...with all five songs played layered on top of one another.

http://www.burncopy.com/trapped_in_t...ll_at_once.mp4

Notice anything funny? The songs are all exactly the same length, the vocals are all done not only in the same style, but in the same format in every single song; he doesn't even try to differentiate the at all. Not only that, but the "drum" beats in all the songs sync up perfectly with one another - all the songs are the same speed. The best part by far is when the climaxes of all the songs sync up and begin at the exact same time, along with the slightly more panicked vocals.

I don't know why this thing has been hailed as the Second Coming by some fans, because not only is it awful, but it's the cookie-cutter format in stunning perfection.

Re: R. Kelly - songwriting genius?

Well, I suppose that saves people the hassle of having to set the "repeat" option on their music player.

Though in this case, I don't know why the hell you would want to listen to it at all.

Re: R. Kelly - songwriting genius?

Well, I hate to be the devil's advocate here, but they may have edited the songs for time to make it seem more stupid. Even so, the fact that they're all the same speed is bad enough. That must be extremely boring to listen to.

Wow. This makes listening to Lamb of God sound that much more appealing.

That was a awsome song parody by Dave Chappelle. I hate R. Kelly, he sucks balls.

I'm actcually surprised that no one liked Trapped in the Closet...? I thought it was quite interesting listening to the entire thing (1-5). That is the only R Kelly song that I've ever been interested in.

Re: R. Kelly - songwriting genius?

R. Kelly is the text book example of an artist who had a good thing going for him but then screwed it all up. If it wasnt for that sex scandal I have a feeling that he would be in a lot better shape with more records than ever.(doesnt mean they would be good though)

R. Kelly is NOT hip hop, he's more R&B.... he still sucks, but I give him props, it takes alot of guts to molest kids

...No. Try listening to all five songs, in order, over and over and over again. You'll soon realize that the time put into these songs must have been two hours, tops. I only know of this song [and only have listened to it over and over again] because my friends love it. I asked them why, and they said "The beat's good and the singing's great".

...

Apparently R.Kelly is targetting idiots for his music. I mean, some of the lyrics in there are too ridiculous that you can't help but laugh at it. As an example: "Then I flip back the cover, omg a rubber..."
I mean seriously, when you listen to that line in the song I can't see how you can stand to not laugh. I mean, some of R.Kelly's stuff was at least catchy, but I mean this isn't even worthy of being deemed catchy, let alone an instant classic.
"OOOh! Five parts! Insta-Classic!"

Re: R. Kelly - songwriting genius?

I guess its not appealing to none R and B fans. I listen to it on a daily basis, and trapped in a closet it quite possibly the greatest story book song I heared. The beat doesn't matter, for it doesn't really change at all, ut its the lyrics that make the song. Damn I want that CD!

Re: R. Kelly - songwriting genius?

...while I shall admit lyrics are a factor in the calculations for a good song, I have to say the music does make the song. Lyrics are just the icing on the cake. I mean, honestly, do you want to listen to the same beat for fifteen damn minutes? Not only that, but the singing also follows an eerily similar pattern throughout the songs.

With that said, the lyrics aren't too impressive on the songs either.

Re: R. Kelly - songwriting genius?

...so to appreciate R. Kelly's 'greatness' I must watch all of his music videos. Hmm...

Nope. No. If I have to do that, the songs obviously aren't that good. Most people don't see music videos for songs, they only listen to the songs. And I have seen the music videos, all it is is actors acting out what R. Kelly sings about. There's no dramatic change in music or talent. It's still the same horrid music.

Re: R. Kelly - songwriting genius?

Greatest musical story book. Hahaha.

You mean concept album, and if you want to hear a better one listen to THe Who's Tommy, or any Pain of Salvation albums. Those are good concept albums, the concept R. Kelly used sucked.

Re: R. Kelly - songwriting genius?

R-Kelly is like Usher, at first some of his song were ok, but now they are crap, overplayed, and painful to listen to.
