Re: Male or Female singers?
this is a really good question!
for whatever reason, it seems like EVERY band out there is a bunch of guys. Possibly because girls are too busy worry about boys and make-up and other superficial things. The only genre where I really see alot of girl singers are like, punky indie bands. I guess I prefer dudes (when it comes to singing of course, hahahaha) over girls. Although I kinda like paramore, kinda.

Re: Male or Female singers?
I lean more towards male singers. My favourite singers, for the most part, have roughness in their voice that female singers rarely have. For example, Adam Gontier, Raine Maida, James Hetfeild, etc.

Re: Male or Female singers?
Well, I'll keep it short and sweet, I enjoy both. The guy singers usually sound better to me with casual rock music and the girls tend to shift towards slow love songs for some weird reason. However, I do enjoy girl singers as much as the guy singers. Especially when they're part of a screamo band. They sound better screaming than guys do IMO.

Re: Male or Female singers?
In terms of preference, I don't particularly care. Some of my favourite vocalists are female, others are male. Though in terms of actual numbers I listen to far more bands with male vocalists than female vocalists (and some with both). But I don't necessarily prefer the ones with male vocalists over the ones with female vocalists.

Re: Male or Female singers?
I listen to a lot of hard rock/heavy metal, so I enjoy a rough voice. Singers I like that come to mind are Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, Bruce Dickinson.
Female voices are typically too soft or high pitched for me.

Re: Male or Female singers?
I don't have a preference at all, cause I've heard girls and guys sing, that gave me goosebumps; but to be honest, I like a girl voice. For instance, Aly, from Aly and AJ.. I heard her sing in "We Three Kings" one day, and I just love her voice in that song.
Anyone hear of Bianca Ryan? There's this one performance that she made at America's Got Talent, and I got mad goosebumps from it. And even though Taylor Swift has this weird voice thing, I can't help but like her voice as well. Especially the female gospel singers. Mahalia Jackson makes my soul melt in a puddle of yummy goodness. I also love the sounds of female singers from before the 60s. The Chordettes for instance, when they sing "Lollipop." But to be fair to the guys, I really like the twangy country voices.

Oh come on guys. Lisa Hannigan. Rihanna. There are plenty of good female vocalists. I don't have a preference. Although my favorite vocalist happens to be male.

Re: Male or Female singers?
Rihanna is basically a karaoke singer at this point. Which doesn't mean she's a bad singer or performer or anything, but it just means she's a karaoke singer.
I was listening to some Feist and Regina Spektor and Tegan and Sara today on my commute to and from work, and realized that I really love all three of those singers. Though it is a weird sensation to realize something that you already knew. |

I don't quite understand what you mean by that, but after I heard Run this Town, I gained a new respect for her as a vocalist.

It's like...her songs aren't written for her, she just performs songs that people wrote. I mean, ever "Umbrella," her arguably most famous song, was written with Britney Spears in mind as the performer. |

Re: Male or Female singers?
I tend to prefer female vocalists.
Amongst my favourites: - Dolores O'Riordan (former lead singer of The Cranberries, now a solo artist) - Alanis Morissette - Sarah Blasko - Enya - Andrea Corr (from The Corrs, now a solo artist) - Madonna - Tracy Thorn (from Everything but the Girl) - Sheryl Crow - Emiliana Torrini - Dido - Kylie Minogue - Natalie Merchant - Lisa Loeb - Jewel - Mel C - Clare Bowditch - Brooke Fraser (for an excellent cover of "Distant Sun") - Natalie Imbruglia - Missy Higgins - Katie Noonan (former lead singer of George, now a solo artist) - Sia Furler - Skye Edwards (former lead singer of Morcheeba) - Duffy - Stevie Nicks - Tasmin Archer - Diana Krall - k.d. lang Edit: I do have some favourite male singers as well, amongst them Chris Martin from Coldplay and Jason Kay from Jamiroquai. The artists/bands I listen to are mainly female though. |

Re: Male or Female singers?
Hm, yes, you did. Haha, I don't know I tend to enjoy her music. I typically DON'T enjoy the I-don't-write-my-own-songs-and-make-subpar-pop-music musician. She's the exception. I got her newest album and really enjoyed it.
