Classical Music.. What happened?

Why is it that no one ever seems to appreciate the classic era? And by classic era I mean from the time of Bach to Sergie Rachmaninoff. Don't get me wrong, there are a quite a few mainstream artists that I enjoy listening to, but doesn't anyone listen to classical music anymore?

Re: Classical Music.. What happened?

I like a good chunk of classical. Beatoven, Bach, Mussorgsky.
I think classical falls into the same spot that movie scores fall into. They can be great and beautiful things, but it's not something you play on your mp3 player alot.

Unless you're me. Majority of music I listen to is classical, movie scores, and video game scores.

I love movie scores as well as ones composed for games as well. I'm a huge John Williams fan. I myself have tons of classical music on my Ipod. Much of the classical music i possess ranges from calm and peaceful pieces in major keys to agitated and passionate pieces, depending on my mood.

Game scores are great too. Here try this on for size. If you like operetic music/clasical you might like this.

I prefer not to listen to classical, but some classical tunes from beethoven do get stuck in my head sometimes.

and the mainstream music is just... ugh.

Re: Classical Music.. What happened?

Classical music was never 'popular' music in the sense that it was created by the people for the people. Most classical pieces from that era were written by composers for members of the upper classes, aristocracies, and monarchies. There was no way for the general populace to hear these pieces, and often couldn't afford to go see them performed live at concert halls.

In the late nineteenth century, music became more 'popularized' starting with the mass publication of sheet music, and followed by the ability to record music and distribute it so that it could be heard without actually physically seeing a band.

Following that other forms of music began to emerge, drawing influences from various places. That was the music that people had access to, and so it is what became the popular music of the era. Access to recordings of classical pieces from the classical era were created, of course, but people were more interested in hearing what was new than with what has old. That trend has basically continued (though what is 'new' can be roughly defined as what has been produced since the popularization of music).

That's my theory, at least.

You guys know that the period of music known as the Classical era did not involve Bach and Beethovan. Bach and Beethovan were in the Romantic period, if I'm not mistaken. What you are referring to is the classical genre.

Just clarifying

I just find it sad that classical music is not as appreciated as it should be
But I have to remember not everyone grew up listening to it, nor did they grow up playing it either.

I'm more of a fan of classical-styled music than actual classic music.

Right, so this was because Forte says he doesn't like himself. I want him to like himself a bit more.

lol.

Beethoven was towards where the classical period started going towards the romantic.

Bach was from the Baroque period, which was way before the Romantic period.

I'm a music major and I really like classical music so don't worry about that. lol.

It's just weird to see people say that Bach was from the Romantic period. I've never seen anybody say that before. XD

Knowing myself I was probably too tired to realize my mistake.

The Baroque period was nice as well. The only thing about the Baroque period is that is lacking greatly in emotion. It was just simply music for the sake of music. A lot of Bach's music was intended for music study purposes.

Re: Classical Music.. What happened?

I am quite the fan of "classical" music. The term "classical" to refer to orchestrated music has been a colloquialism, I believe that is the correct word. I tend to refer to orchestral music as "classical" as it is easier.

The baroque period has created most of my favourite songs. I love Frescobaldi, Vivaldi, Hande, etc.

As a young primary school student, I listened to classical music almost exclusively. Up until about 3 or 4 years ago, I was really unfamiliar with modern rock, pop, techno music and bands. Of course, I decided to delve into that kind of music and I really enjoy it now! When I was 5, I listened to "classical" music for an hour every night before falling alseep. Good times, good times.

Also. Orchestrated video game music and rock songs are amazing <3

Yeah, I've had to analyze a lot of those Bach pieces. D: They were no fun. But then I got to more modern classical music and I was begging desperately to go back to Bach. XD

Anyways, I love Baroque music. It's probably my favorite kind. It just sounds so cool. I love the harpsichord and the usage of the instruments.

yea, but don't forgot that even the common people had exposure on a weekly basis to classical music through church.

Bach being the best example. The Passions, organ music/fugas, keyboard stuff, etc......

also any polyphonic music from the catholic church as well.

the MeisterSingers from Germany and their French/english equivalents couldn't be called anything but music of the people, for the people, by the people. The poets and beatniks of their time, to be sure.

Haydn, mozart, and Opera in general, fit more your description of things.

Chamber music (ie string quartets) was typically the music of the middle class and the currently dying breed referred to as the "amateur classical musician".

Once industrialism hit and the middle class became a sizeable demographic, those who could afford instruments, lessons, and sheet music would often perform chamber music with friends in more intimate settings such as house parties, private social events among friends, etc....

Re: Classical Music.. What happened?

I listen to classical music. I love it. Especially Bach, Chopin, Beethoven, and Mozart.

Fun fact about me:
When I was in the womb, my mom always put on classical music. Especially Chopin and when I was about 3 years old, I always would go to the classical music section of a music store and listen to it.

Re: Classical Music.. What happened?

The reason classical music isn't popular is for many reasons. For starters, most is not catchy. People these days want to tune in their radio and hear a short, 2 minute long catchy song. Not a 45 minute long symphony. Also, classical music is usually considered "uncool". Cuz obviously anyone who listens to it is a band geek or something *rolls eyes*. Newer music is just considered to be more cool by many. IN fact, most new things in general are considered more cool than old things (with some exceptions mind you!). Also, it is WAAAAY cheaper to buy a modern instrument like a guitar or keyboard than it is to buy an upright bass, or a cello, or a tuba, or anyother classical related instrument.

I myself listen to classical occasionally. I listen to it sometimes when I'm trying to fall asleep because I find it soothing. Nothing beats the sweet sound of strings. I play upright bass and I enjoy playing classical pieces. I also enjoyed my experiences with regional and all-state orchestras.

I find that I listen to very little "classical" music actually. More neo-classical and modern contemporary pieces. But, you know, orchestral stuff still.
