what is your favorite metal band?

I knew I wasn't mistaken. XD
But then again, I guess it comes down to what genre people think they are. Wiki for example has them labeled as Death Core....... Nothing else.

when it comes to classifying metal bands there is one site you can trust and that is www.metal-archives.com

Deathcore is a mix of death metal and and hardcore.

Some bands are more metal than hardcore others are more hardcore than metal. Kill whitney is more hardcore than metal.

The Archives are the only place you can get reliable information on any metal band. Killwhitneydead aren't listed on there, and that's pretty much an indication that they're so obscure no one has heard their stuff or that they're simply not metal. I would classify them as deathcore to be honest.

Metallica is pretty much the only metal band I listen to. So they would be my favourite.

Judas Priest
Megadeth
Metallica
There's more I won't list.

Eyehategod
The Melvins (If you consider them sludge, which is arguable.)
The Broken Bricks
Weedeater
Cavity
Lard (Though I wouldn't call them metal- I'd call them industrial hardcore)
DRI (Though I also wouldn't call them metal- I'd call them thrash punk)

I'd argue that, while more cursory, Wikipedia is also a very good source.

^Sludge is a subgenre of metal so yes they count. Along with Eyehategod (part of the COC team).

so I don't really listen to metal but I'm intrigued with thrice and the mars volta. (those are considered metal, right?)

So I'm hoping to pick up that music soon.

Mars Volta is prog rock, my friend. As for Thrice, arent they a more alternative based band?

@Devia: I don't think either of those would be classified as metal. The Mars Volta is (like we're discussing in VM) Progressive Rock. Also experimental rock I'd say, with some psychedelic influences as well.

Thrice is definitely mostly post-hardcore, with some melodic hardcore in their last two or three records I'm pretty sure. Probably some alternative rock as well for good measure. I actually just picked up Vheissu from my friend the other day. Haven't listened to it yet (other than "Image of the Invisible," which I already had).

Genres are confusing sometimes.

Master's sound isn't all that different from Ride the Lightning. Quite frankly, after the success of the Black Album, I think Metallica sold their soul to producing pseudo-Metal. The draw of money was too great. Too bad the bus accident didn't happen on the Black Album tour, killing all of Metallica, but not Cliff. Metallica would've become a great legend as opposed to fizzling out to what they are today: old men trying to hard to do what they did in the mid-'80s. Everything from Kill 'em All to the Black Album is great, especially Kill 'em All through Justice. But, honestly, out of the other Four, Megadeth is better. They stayed true and Dave kicks Kirk's ass, as much as I like old Kirk, before he began raping his poor wah-wah pedal(s). Chop his feet off!

Edit: The only complaint I really have for Master/Justice is that some of the songs are a bit too long, but ah well. The Black Album is good, but overrated. I cannot stand Enter Sandman at all. Ugh.

Modern deathcore isn't even influenced by punk that much anymore, I just can't see the influences. That being said, it's safe to say they're deathcore, not hardcore punk.

witchcraft is probably my favorite metal band. They sound like sabbath and pentagram's baby. (those two bands are great too)

doom metal is great too, sleep, black pyramid, valkyrie, the sword, and some electric wizard.

does drone doom count as metal? nadja, atavist, and boris are all good...
