Is Black Sabbath really metal?

No, Black Sabbath used to be metal, but the genre has evolved, and Black Sabbath has remained the same. They are now simply rock.

Yeah the genre has evolved, but they started metal. They were the first to ever be called "heavy metal" and that term exactly.

That's like saying The Legend of Zelda (NES) is not a Zelda game because the series has evolved so far from it. Yeah, it's so incredibly different from what the series looks and feels like today, but at its core, it's the same. Black Sabbath will forever be the roots of metal. Remember, you see the tree, not the roots, but those are what fueled the growth of the tree in the first place.

If Black Sabbath was metal, and kept doing the same thing, then they are still metal.
I guess you could call them "Classic Metal" or something like that, but they are still metal.

I actually was reading some notes. And I had a ruler and a compass, and I did some math, and I am pretty sure that they are not metal.

I have seen a lot of metal in my days.

Well, if they were once metal, and kept doing the same type of music, they should still be considered metal.

If you never considered them metal, then you wouldn't be contradicting yourself. In which case, cool, and we're all good.

Black Sabbath were one of the pioneers of Metal, along with Hendrix, Cream, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. I consider those bands Proto-Metal. Though I must admit, those said bands have more of a bluesy feel to them
