Re: Do people still buy CDs?
I don't buy **** cuz I'm poor. But if I had $ I'd buy the CD. I like the booklets and stuff. I like having a tangible item, plus CD's sound better. I am finicky about sound quality, being a producer and all.

Re: Do people still buy CDs?
I don't do downloaded music.
First off, I'm unwilling to steal. As for downloading from iTunes or whatnot, why get lower-quality files which I have to back up on CDs anyway (or risk losing forever should my hard drive die), when I can get high-quality files in nicer packaging, without the risk of sudden, devastating loss? I also buy LPs when I feel like it. |

Re: Do people still buy CDs?
I buy CDs from bands I really like. Even then, it's like, 1 or 2 a year.

Re: Do people still buy CDs?
Yeah, I never buy CDs. I can easily listen to the albums anyway, without even having to download them a lot of the time. I'll download a lot of music if I'm not a massive fan of the band. Even then, I haven't bothered to even download music in some months now.

Re: Do people still buy CDs?
I always buy CDs. I usually save up for three weeks so I can buy a CD. But since it's the Beatles, I have to save up a bunch, but I wouldn't download illegally, and I've never used iTunes before.

Re: Do people still buy CDs?
I do. Every paycheck usually goes to at least one new CD, book and game. But the best times are used record store trips, where I usually come home with 5-10. Nothing beats bargain bins. Completed my Smiths discography the other day thanks to one of those.

Re: Do people still buy CDs?
I tend to avoid used CDs and similar because they are prone to damage; additionally, quality can be diminished by damage. CDs are built with redundant layers, which is why scratches don't cause significant problems, but they can still reduce the accuracy in playback. Ideally, I buy a CD, rip it to my computer using Exact Audio Copy, encode in FLAC format, and then store the CD away to never (or rarely) be touched again.

Re: Do people still buy CDs?
FLAC is probably the greatest thing ever. I do the same.
I tend to avoid bad used record stores in general. Thankfully, the one I frequent is really anal about quality, so they pretty much never accept anything that isn't virtually mint. And they still price things at used prices, so it's perfect for my wallet.

just last week I got an original copy of led zeppelin IV in mint condition for $4. And a near mint copy of kansas' masque for $2. You can't beat it! Quote:
CD's are pretty solid comparitavely to other forms of audio, like tapes which can distort overtime, and vinyl, which can be scratched easily.

Re: Do people still buy CDs?
I'll buy a CD if it's a band or artist that I really want to support. And it's funny that you mention Steven Wilson, because I didn't buy the Insurgentes CD. Sorry man, even though that cover is freaking awesome.
The only CDs I've bought in the past year are Phantom on the Horizon by The Fall of Troy (because it was a limited release), and Strawberry Jam and Merriweather Post Pavillion by Animal Collective. The rest are downloads. And with downloads it's usually the obscure indie stuff that I get, because you can't really find it streaming anywhere and I just download to see if I like it. That's how most of my collection started.

Re: Do people still buy CDs?
There are mp3 players out there that do support .flac. However, I doubt that your going to be carrying around head phones intricate enough that will let you hear the difference between 320 kbs mp3's and a .flac file.

Re: Do people still buy CDs?
I agree with this. Most portable headphones are not good enough to really show any noticeable difference between the two formats, especially with background noise etc. Only high-end studio or audiophile headphones, or an expensive pair of speakers, are going to show much difference.
