Classical Music
I'm not sure why (probably because I'm in the school band and school chorus and we play/sing that kind of music), but over the past few months I've developed an interest in classical music and music wihtout words (video game music, movie scores, etc.). Now don't get me wrong; I still like rock, but only old rock (Beatles and Queen mostly). This gradual change in music interest creeped me out because I've always hated classical music. I used to think it was so dull and boring because (prepare for an awkward adn ironic statement) it had no words!
Another contributing factor could be the fact that I am not liking today's music: heavy metal (a.k.a. screaming to music) and rap (a.k.a. talking to a beat). I come from a musical family (actually only my mother's side) (my brother, my mom, and I are all very musically talented) and none of us have ever considered rap to be music at all. I prefer "artists" like Mozart, Beethoven, and Koji Kondo (best video game music composer ever!), not artists like Iron Maiden and 50 Cent. Do you like classical music? Do you write music (without words)? I "write" (actually I just sing it into my phone) my own fake video game music (music for video games I make up, with Zelda-style tunes).

Re: Classic Music
My grandpa always has some Classic station going on and I think a lot of it is pretty bad. However, I hear songs by people such as Billy Joel and Mozart that make me remember that it's pretty good.
I didn't develop a real interest in it until I heard some metal bands with blatant Classic roots in them, then I became more interested in the genre. I've never explored it because I never knew where to start, but I suppose if I check out some stuff by Billy Joel then I will get a better idea of where to look. By the way, heavy metal isn't all "screaming". It's more of death metal and -core bands that do the screaming. Bands like AC/DC and Black Sabbath are referred to as heavy metal sometimes. Brian Johnson is more of a yell/screech at times and Ozzy doesn't do screaming. As for today's artists, some of A7X and newer Disturbed lack screaming. Slipknot is more of a growl.

Re: Classic Music
I dislike most Operas. It always sounds so tragic, even when happy, and it's so ridiculously overplayed that it is hard to take seriously. Some opera-lover might hate me for this now.
But I like classical music. My favourite period is definitely the romantic period. Composers like Beethoven (yes, he is a romantic composer), Brahms, Berlioz, Grieg, Schubert, Chopin and the likes - marvelous! I'm not particularily fond of Mozart. I like his attraction to simplicity and his songs are very catchy, but they sound so organic and emotionless. I'm pretty sure Mozart himself would agree though, but he'll blame the music of his time.

Re: Classic Music
Classical music is teh **** yo! Had to.
I find classical music to be complex. And never boring. I feel that it is the perfect form of music. Someone like Mozart is able to speak so much with his music. I hear volumes of emotion from his music. And yet a word is never said. It's very complex at times. And yet can be simple. I feel it's perfect because of how it's made. Now I love Billy Joel. But if I sit down and "play" piano man, I only have half (if that) of his work. Now that's if I was perfect at the piano, and I so am not. But because you can't sing like Billy Joel you can't emulate his music 100%. His music is made for him to sing. When somebody else does it it falls a little short. But with Mozart, and Bach, etc. When you play that you are playing that how he wrote it to be played. What you are playing he played. You are bringing him from the grave with his music, channeled through your hands, into your piano. Music can't get any better than that. I also love when you pair classical music with high action. Nothing thrills me more than fast based video games and Mozart. Like doom 3 with the chainsaw. You hear the winds playing softly. And the strings joining them. And the rip of the chainsaw into the flesh of hell. That makes for wonderful contrast. Same thing in any FPS when you have, oh let us say "ode to joy" as you run around with a shotgun. I love being at a LAN party and blasting some guy's face full of buckshot while I play such a slow song. The feeling is, like none other. |

Re: Classic Music
Since I play(ed) piano, violin and flute all the way through school until now, I prefer soundtracks and songs without words. I'm taking Music Theory (hard but very interesting class) and I'm starting to compose multiple part songs without vocals and stuff. Whenever I download a song that has singing I tend to listen to the background music rather then the actual words. Does anyone else do that? e_e;;;
Also I like the instrumentals from Nightwish's new(ish) album Dark Passion play. Symphonic metal. Yes. |

I hear he was quite the lady's man, too. Bach, Sr. has always been my favorite, although there are a few other Baroque composers that I've become attached to. Vivaldi is always nice, too.As for modern stuff, I would recommend Might Could to anybody who likes videogame music. I was first introduced to their music after listening to their acoustic versions of early Nintendo game themes (their Zelda song is sooo cute!). I bought their first two albums on iTunes and love every song.

Re: Classic Music
I very much enjoy classical music, Chopin, Mozart. But I must say movie scores and such are my favorites. John Williams is one of the best composers ever. He created so many recognizable themes that I personally cherish. Each time I hear the the name "Indiana Jones" I think of the theme to it. Most notably one of my favorite scores by John Williams is the Saving Private Ryan Omaha Beach score. It's so fitting.
Classical music I feel delivers a relaxing state for me. No matter it be a action intense score, or dull some might say. I am a big fan. A lot of people I've talked to don't take to it as much as the do with rock, etc. I love rock don't get me wrong, but I think classical music "speaks" more to me. I know most of you probably agree, but video game scores are very nice as well. Be it Zelda, Mario, Halo, etc. They orchestra introduces such more epic feelings to me through the games. That's why I feel they need to import more orchestrated music into games. |

Re: Classic Music
Of course. Before Beethoven no one had made as great music as Bach. However, I like Beethoven's music better when he was deaf, and then he could only recall Bachs music by memory, and I'm of the belief anyways that Beethoven strength as a composer grew past Bach after a while.
And also, Beethoven only said harmony, and for his time, Bach was a master of harmony. What Beethoven didn't know however, was that his unique sense of harmony ended up to be a founding principle in the romantic period and thus also causing the explosion into atonality in the 20th century. So Beethoven probably didn't know his eventual harmonic mastership. There are also other qualities to a composer than the ones that are merely harmonic. And I'm not trying to start a fiery discussion as I know tastes differ, and I am aware of that you at most were semi-serious. It's all fun and games!

Re: Classic Music
I play alot of classic music myself. Telemann is probably my favorite classic composer (did I spell that right?). I prefer stuff that is melodic really. I'm not all for the steriotypical loud then soft dynamic changes that are present in much of bach's/bethovens work. I like some more contemporary orchestral music that has lots of dissenance in it, but that isn't really classical is it?

Re: Classic Music
It really depends on how you define classical, but there are a lot of dissonance in the 19th century too. Just listen to Hector Berlioz' "Symphonie Fantastique". There are some obvious dissonance-moments there. Most of the "radical" composers of the romantic period used a lot of dissonance as they viewed instrumentation as an aspect as important as harmony.

Re: Classic Music
I honestly don't understand why people dislike classical music so much. I mean, it's got that technical talent and all the complexity to keep the 'shock' effect, while at the same time it's got so much emotion, making you feel like you're traveling to a different world, as if being warped inside a movie screen while watching a movie.
Oh, and I know this may sound weird, but is it just me who thinks that Heavy Metal took much of its roots from Classical Music? I'm a big fan of both genres, and listening to them daily, I notice that both of them seem to share some factors that make the genres good. Technical talent, complexity, and emotion (yes, some Heavy Metal does have a lot of emotion. Go listen to some Porcupine Tree then you'll know what I'm talking about). On a side note, I've been playing Piano for around three-and-a-half years and am in Grade 4.
