Is something wrong with my guitar?

First off, I'm a noob at guitar so I really don't know much about them.

Anyway, I've been trying to get my guitar to standard tuning. The 6th, 5th, and 4th strings are all in tune, but my 3rd string is stuck. Whenever I try to tune it, occasionally the tuner makes a popping noise and the string goes down to about as low as it can go.

Can someone please tell me what wrong? Do I need a new guitar or can it be fixed?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Is something wrong with my guitar?

The stringing job is bad, and/or the tuning peg is out of whack. What's likely happening is that the string is literally slipping as you tighten it, causing the sound to drop. Mine has the same problem, but it's on the...fourth string, I believe. You just have to veeeerrrry gentle when tuning it so that it doesn't jump octaves, and try to gauge when it is going to happen so you can stop just short of it. Of course, it means getting exact tuning is going to be much trickier.

The best solution would be just to replace the string. Which reminds me that I really do need to change the strings on my guitar...

it could also be because your string is wrapping on itself when you tune it up and it slides off itself under the tension. I would suggest just taking the string off, cutting a tad shorter and then re-wrapping it. Or you could try to just replace the string if your lazy.

That's quite a good idea actually, but I really don't know any guitar shops... or music shops for that matter.

^^^ Oh, ok. I would just get a new string. It may not be strung properly.

Re: Is something wrong with my guitar?

Yeah man just find out where a guitar shop near to you is, take it in whip it out and explain the problem they will probably charge you a small fee, if your lucky they'll sort it out for free, but remember it's worth it. I've got a decent guitar and I always used to have to play about with it to get it right- locking tremolos are a pain in the ass
