Re: Top 5 Albums: 2008

I've started thinking about my albums of the year list, and while I have an ok idea of where some albums are going to land, there's still some stuff I need to hear. Namely, City and Colour (which I have, just haven't listened to yet), Lydia, The Raconteurs, R.E.M., Fleet Foxes, The Offspring, Girl Talk, and Okkervil River. Whether or not I actually get to hear any of those before the year is done remains to be seen, but I don't think many of them are likely.

I haven't really started putting anything in order, so I can't say any top five...yet.

I don't have a Top 5, as I just can't seem to enjoy any music that comes out anymore.

I'm not a Coldplay fan, but from what I've heard, I heard that it really shocked people, in terms of being much better than they thought it would be.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting that album to be so good either. I mean, I love Coldplay, but until Viva la Vida came out, I never considered them to be near the top of my favourite bands list.

They don't make albums like they used to.

I'm going with Coldplay.

1:
AC/DC - Black Ice

2:
Mudhoney - The Lucky Ones

3:
Disturbed - Indestructible

4:
Metallica - Death Magnetic

5:
The Offspring - Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace

This year was rather average, I'd say. I'm looking forward to a possible QOTSA album in '09.

I didn't like Viva La Vida that much, to be honest. I still think they went downhill with X&Y and kept going, but I'm on my own there xD

Anyway, I'm very very predictable and I think we all know which release ranks highest with me this year,

IT WAS SO GOOD.

Saw them live earlier this year. I wasn't there for them. They were an energetic live band, but my God, I find it hard to call their recordings music... I just end up getting an intense headache whenever I hear a song by them.

Not what I expected. Heartfelt, real, stripped down but a little bit cold and distanced/impersonal thanks to the auto-tune vocals. Fantastic.

Other albums I enjoyed include In Ghost Colors by Cut Copy, Apocalypso by The Presets, Death Cab for Cutie's Narrow Stairs. This year wasn't bad for music, but it wasn't exactly standout apart from a few gems.

Biggest let down of the year goes to Oasis. I should stop expecting anything from them already.

Lydia's Illuminate is really great music for just relaxing, winding down or chilling out. I don't think I'd list it as a top album though, it was a bit too... ordinary, for me. Kind of a "been there, done that" affair.

My Top 5, anyway. I bet there were better, but these are the five best albums I've bought this year, so...yeah.

Considering how much I'm into Copeland and other chilling music, I might like it quite a bit. I've just heard and seen it pimped out by so many people that I figure I might as well give it a shot, but I don't think I'll have the time.

I think Kanye is getting my pop album of the year nod, barring any unforseen changes of heart or hearing something that completely blows it out of the water.

Re: Top 5 Albums: 2008

My favorite so far of this year would have to be Kanye's 808's and Heartbreak, and Forgive Durden's Razia's Shadow.

808's and Heartbreak was really good, especially considering that Kanye made it. He's not the world's best singer, but he's got the perfect vocals for the mood he's going for. A very emotional album that at a first glance could come across as boring, but at further listening I've noticed all the little undertones and really digested all the lyrics and melodies, and it's really a heartfelt let it all out album. Worth a listen.

Razia's Shadow blew me away. It's amazing in every way. It has amazing melodies, a great variety of songs, a large cast of very talented singers, well-written lyrics, and catchy hooks even find their way in here and there. On top of that, the album is written like a musical, in the style of the songs and in the sense that there's a story being told. The story is very well done, and the music does such an excellent job of telling it. It's not getting anywhere near the attention it deserves, so I encourage you all to give it a listen, and hopefully run down to the store and pick a copy up.

Re: Top 5 Albums: 2008

I kind of changed my mind. It's simply impossible to make a top 5:

1. MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
2. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!
3. White Denim - Workout Holiday
4. Fleet Foxes - s/t
5. The Hold Steady - Stay Positive

I guess it'll change some numerous times the next days, anyways.

Re: Top 5 Albums: 2008

I've spent most of this year catching up on old music, so I don't think I've listened to any new album in full yet this year.

I'll save this space for Dismember's self titled, as I have very high hopes for that. Possibly Oasis' latest too, depending on how good it turns out to be.

Re: Top 5 Albums: 2008

While somewhat subject to change in the near future, and doubtless subject to change in the long term, my top five of favourites looks like this:

1. Good Old War - The Only Way to Be Alone
2. Soundtrack - Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
3. Forgive Durden - Razia's Shadow: A Musical
4. Less Than Jake - GNV FLA
5. Coldplay - Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends
