Lately I've really liked Dragonslayer by Sunset Rubdown. Sunset Rubdown is the solo project of Paul Krug, the lead singer of Wolf Parade, for anyone who didn't know, and their latest album is incredible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsPkyMi2WWU By far the best track on the album is Apollo and the Buffalo and Anna Anna Anna Oh! in my opinion, although tracks 1, 4, and 6 are really good as well. Also, they're re-releasing the Stone Roses eponymous debut album. Even if you don't get the re-release, everyone should check out the actual album. It's really good proto-indie with a strong pop sensibility. Most people will probably recognize "She Bangs the Drums" from guitar hero, but the songs "Made of Stone" and "Bye Bye Badman" are both very good.

Two prerequisites: Enjoy ska/punk. Enjoy Radiohead. This live album by the Arrogant Sons of *****es is all covers of Radiohead songs, and it's INCREDIBLE. Almost every song on the album sends chills down my spine. Through my arms, too. Anyway, do it. It's great. SO GREAT.

Oh man.
"In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" -- Neutral Milk Hotel Fuzz-Folk, I call it. Indie acoustic with brilliant lyrics. Definitely my current obsession. "Goodbye Cool World" -- Bomb The Music Industry! Punk/ska. You may hate them at first, but man, they grow on you. They sing about getting drunk, losing friends, unemployment, and things like that. Jeff Rosenstock is a terrible singer. BTMI! is by far my favourite band. "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" -- Pavement Old school lo-fi indie. Doesn't get any better than that. "A Call To Arms" -- Bandits Of The Acoustic Revolution Tomas Kalnoky's orchestral ska side project. He's the lead vocalist and guitarist for Streetlight Manifesto. Personally, I think BOTAR is better, even though they only have five songs. They are the best five songs ever made. "Feels" -- Animal Collective Hm. Psychedelic experimental stuff. Avey Tare's voice kind of reminds me of Andrew VanWyngarden from MGMT. Maybe I'm just crazy though? "Ragged Wood" -- Fleet Foxes A lovely indie folk band. They sing about nature type stuff. Listening to them makes me want to go kayaking or hiking. and "Somewhere In The Between" -- Streelight Manifesto Skaaaaaaa. So good. Yeah.

Re: Favourite Albums/Album Recommendations
Well, for me, it's a toss up between Goodbye Cool World and Scrambles. And I originally had both on my list, but I decided just to put one. To be honest I don't think Album Minus Band is one of they're better ones.. Even Get Warmer comes before it, in my opinion.

![]() It does not have the immature toilet humor that blink-182 is known for. Their style in this album is much different than previous ones. There still is swearing, but it's not as senseless and unnecessary as in other albums. I think that no matter what kind of music you're into, you'll like at least one or maybe two of the songs on this album. |

Re: Favourite Albums/Album Recommendations
Check out The Mountain Goats, especially older records like All Hail West Texas. Lo-fi goodness, even moreso than NMH.

Re: Favourite Albums/Album Recommendations
Also check out The Olivia Tremor Control, Jeff Mangum was a member for awhile and they sound very similar to NMH.
Completely unrelated but the best album of 2009 is totally Dragonslayer by Sunset Rubdown. It doesn't even matter than it's basically prog rock! |

Re: Favourite Albums/Album Recommendations
![]() Two of my favourite tracks from the album are "Holding Someone's Hair Back" and "In Fear and Faith". It's better than their second album "On Letting Go", but that album also has some fantastic songs on it.

Re: Favourite Albums/Album Recommendations
I checked it out by your recommendation.
I honestly enjoyed the instrumentation and the progression, but the singer was so terrible that I couldn't barely understand what he was saying, and it just ruined the whole experience for me. This really isn't normally a problem (Led Zeppelin, anyone?), but in this work, the vocal is the central instrument, the focus of the songs. That makes it really hard to get into if you don't enjoy the singer. Might give it a second chance when I'm less busy.

Re: Favourite Albums/Album Recommendations
Next to the religious themes in the lyrics, Aaron's vocals are probably the most divisive thing about the band.
You should hear what they sound like on their first record. |

Re: Favourite Albums/Album Recommendations
I remember liking one song by mewithoutYou. It's that one where in the video they're on a theatrical stage dressing up and whatever. His vocals are hard to get used to though I guess, since he practically talks through songs.

Really, I think mwY is just one of those bands that you either can listen to, and love it, or can't and...don't. Very little middle ground when it comes to them, I think. |
