Out of the options given, Led Zeppelin, just because they played a very large and very key role in creating that hard rock sound.

But, of all time, I have to agree with Ejiro and Laika and say The Beatles. In terms of influence, in terms of sound, in terms of popularity, in terms of pretty much everything. They were, pretty much, the first international superstars of rock and roll (looking at an artist like Elvis as an individual rather than a 'band').

Why in God's name is Nirvana up there. They are so boring to listen to.

And I'd have to concur with the Beatles. I personally really like the Beach Boys, but they're not as rock as you're looking for.

While Pink Floyd is the best artist on that list, some lesser known artists such as Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys, Lard), Toots and the Maytels, and They Might be Giants really shine above the rest for me. That being said, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Metallica are terrible, and shouldn't even be on that list.

Pink Floyd is only the best artist if you like phasing atmpsheric soundscapes without structure

Ok, Floyd is not actually that bad but if you're talking best by means of musical composition Zep's Rain Song or Since I've Been Loving You match Floyd's best easily.

And you're a hundred percent right about Skynyrd and Metallica.

Zeppelin is way overrated. The only decent albums are III and Houses of the Holy.

You stole my two favourite Zep albums!

If you ask me, Pink Floyd is overrated. But you might have a good point about the Who. I don't consider Zep a 'plain' rock band anyway.

RATT are the best rock band ever in my opinion,catchy riffs, awesome guitar solos, pounding drums which are tight with the bass! Warren Demartini is hands down the ultimate guitarist! Ratt'N'Roll!!!!!

My other choice would be Van Halen considering how Eddie influenced every other guitarist after him, also the fact that they have the greatest frontman ever has to count for something... MICHAEL ANTHONY'S DRUNK BASS SOLOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1984 kicks ass. the the David Lee Roth solo band "the eat em and smile band" with Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan rocked as well, Yankee Rose is the best air guitar song ever!!

OR thre is Ozzy with Jake.e.lee; Bark at the moon and the ultimate Sin -both great albums both rocked VERY hard!


As for pink floyd they don't rock enough to count, although Gilmour is a top guitarist.. some of the most memorable solos came from that dude, but come on the dark side of the moon didn't exactly "rock"

My opinions don't count though, I don't care for classic rock.

That's stupid, and this thread is somewhat stupid, too. There never will be a 'best' rock band, because everry band influence(s/d) things in their own different way. Zeppelin took blues and gave it a bit of aggression, Metallica started what we know as thrash today pretty much (the same could be made for Sabbath on the topic of metal in general), and the Beatles made good songwriting a standard.

The Eagles are just stupid, mindless assclowns.

Nirvana suffers from 'dead-singer syndrome'; they wouldn't be half as popular today if Cobain hadn'tve killed himself. He'd be singing duets with Whitney Houston for his new comeback album as we speak.

The one song AC/DC write is okay.

Floyd practically invented progressive rock, so yeah, they're pretty damn good.

Guns 'N' Roses are just old-school metal watered down to a radio friendly level.

I love bands who write ambient soundscapes (King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree) and I believe Pink Floyd was the first band to write rock music in this style. Pink Floyd is definitely not for everyone. In terms of songwriting, they were top notch. Although they made had a distinctive sound, there were subtleties in their music that made no two songs quite the same. *end Pink Floyd wankage*

The Who just blow Zeppelin out of the water. The members played with such chemistry and just create this wall of sound that continues moving from the beginning of an album to the end. Zeppelin just feel stiff at times. It doesn't always flow.

There's is nothing wrong with Led Zeppelin, but the level of change brought to music through Pink Floyd's compositions is unparalleled by any track put out by Zeppelin. For example, "Interstellar Overdrive" really showcases Floyd's experimentalism and its impact on future artists display how revolutionary they really were. Furthermore, later albums, after the addition of John Waters to the band (DSotM, The Wall, etc...) showoff Floyd's beautiful technical and lyrical finesse.
