Re: favourite metal bands

I've realised that some of the stuff i'm listening is leaning more towards Hardcore Punk and stuff.

1. Lifetime
2. I Killed The Prom Queen
3. Rites of spring
4. Sepultura
5. IN FLAMES

I know which ones are what genre and everything.

Re: favourite metal bands

Speaking of metal, I got a sampler from HMV entited Full Metal Sampler along with Oath Bound by Summoning the other day. The latter is an amazing album, but the former... well, not so much. The only distinctly metal bands on it are Megadeth, Killswitch Engage, 3 Inches of Blood, DÅÅTH, The End, Sanctity, Trivium, Cradle of Filth, and Children of Bodom... out of 21 songs. The rest is - I kid you not - post-harcore garbage and acoustic indie-pop. Out of the identifiably metal songs on there, the only ones that are actually worth listening to are "Ovum" from DÅÅTH, "Zeppo" from Sanctity (who are actually a pretty decent traditional/thrash metal band), and the live version of "Follow the Reaper" by Children of Bodom. The demo version of Megadeth's "Gears of War" isn't so bad, either, but it's also new Megadeth, so that isn't saying much at all.

All these bands that I've been interested in from seeing them in the store for the last few months, like The End... well, they're ****. Seriously, if you're going to give out a metal sampler, why don't you actually put more than one or two decent songs on it, or hell, why not actually put more than 40% metal on it? The title is totally contrary to what you'd actually find on it. Jeez, I can't stand those ****ty metalcore vocals. And Christ, 3 Inches of Blood? I'd heard things about them, but it's just Iron Maiden with a bit more technicality and a singer who sounds like he's been gurgling semen.

I'm going to get some Slough Feg. Not even Summoning is enough to get the ringing out of my ears.

Well, it was free. I usually detest "best of" and compilation-type albums.

That's something I'd like to know as well...

It was basically one of my first views of metal, and i thought they were horrible and my 12 year old mind thought that all of it was terrible as well.

Luckily I found Carpathian a year later.

Re: favourite metal bands

I always tried to get into the death/black metal stuff, but I could never get past the growling vocals. Maybe I'm just picky, or maybe years of listening to Dickinson-era Maiden conditioned me toward clean vocals. Meh, I don't put down the heavier stuff though, there's some truly epic musicianship in there. Especially Opeth, I really enjoyed Opeth, even despite the growling.

Sooo, as far as metal goes:

1. Iron Maiden
2. Queensryche(These guys count as metal, right? >.>)
3. Dream Theater
4. 80's Metallica
5. Old Megadeth

From 6-9 the list goes into Power Metal. If you fear the power of the cheese then I caution you against reading and just skipping down to 10.

6. Blind Guardian
7. Sonata Arctica
8. Hammerfall
9. Kamelot

Annnnd

10. Iced Earth.

I'd also like to add a few things about Slipknot. The first time I heard them I just thought to my self "Man, this is nothing but a bunch of annoying sounds put on a 6 minute track." My opinion hasn't really changed. However, I've seen a surge of their fans recently. Ones claiming that Joey Jordidson is the best drummer ever(when clearly this honor goes to Neil Peart.) Any fans want to explain this one to me? I'd really love to know.
