Re: favourite metal bands

I like hard rock more than metal. About the only metal I'll listen to is stoner metal bands like Kyuss and Slo Burn, which are borderline hard rock anyways. Occasionally some old Metallica. (Ride the Lightning <3)

That said, I'll listen to stuff that is derivative of metal. Grunge, for example, whose roots lie in 70s/80s heavy metal. (Alice in Chains, Soundgarden) Then there's the glam-metal influenced bands that are more hard rock than anything (GnR, Mother Love Bone) and if I'm feeling particularly kinky, I'll listen to alt-metal like Deftones and RATM.

Other than that, it is a strict diet of rock.

On a related note, nu-metal is not metal. It is much like post-grunge and pop-punk: A commercialized, softer, more poppier and radio-friendly version of the genre it plays off of.

Re: favourite metal bands

To be honest, I'm just starting to get into stoner metal. Kyuss I started listening to, since they effectively gave birth to Queens of the Stone Age, whom I love. From there I found Slo Burn, since they and Kyuss have the same vocalist.

Been meaning to check out Monster Magnet, Spiritual Beggars and Hermano, but havn't gotten around to it yet. I'll add those two you mentioned to my list.

You're ignorant. Have you ever listened to power metal? Thrash metal? Folk metal? Traditional heavy metal? Progressive metal? Avant-garde metal? While some of these may contain things like growled vocals or double-bass drumming on occasion, they are for the most part highly melodic (perhaps excluding thrash), far more so than Slipknot, KoRn and System of a Down. You think that all "true" metal these days is in the death and black categories; you could not be more wrong. Go listen to some Agalloch, or Vintersorg, or Arcturus, or Municipal Waste, or Rhapsody of Fire, or hell, even DragonForce, and tell me that those are black and death metal. That's right, they're not, but they're all considered to be metal. Something tells me there's a little problem with your logic. Try understanding what you're talking about before you open your mouth. Sophistry is only appreciated by people who are less knowledgeable than you; I do not appreciate it.

Nu metal is a metal genre, as its title indicates, so to say that it's not "true" metal is a little bit silly, because there are plenty of "metal" bands that take a huge influence from non-rock-based musical genres, and nu metal's rap and hip-hop influence is no different in that regard. However, what is at issue is the quality of nu metal; as a genre, it seems to be consistently crappy in the eyes of most metalheads. The fact that a lot of nu metal fans come from hip-hop or pop-rock backgrounds even widens the division between them and other more supposedly "legitimate" fans.

Nu-metal has much more in common with rock than it does metal honestly, I don't think I could ever call it metal.

sorry. misunderstanding. i far from hate metal. i was not refering to the heavier categories as the only true metal, i was responding to earlier comments that indicated this was the case. its just that these ridiculously heavy genres that are increasingly popular and seem to be what a lot of people are beginning to regard as "real" metal, while less heavy more tuneful metal music is getting left behind and labelled as rock.

Early stuff is nu metal, though they are kind of nu metal and hardcore now. Not metal. Though, namely Slipknot has little experiment into it. Which is their downfall really.

For one, death metal is much more than mindless guitar riffs and way too much bass.
Cannibal Corpse is just that basically.

You could of course for a change respect other people's opinions in stead of constantly bashing them.

Re: favourite metal bands

I don't liek those bands either, but that doesn't mean you have to put others down just to feel better about yourself. Everyone has their preferences.

Re: favourite metal bands

It was mostly because three of those bands arn't even metal. Well, I suppose Shadows Fall is but even then. Preferences don't make Slipknot and Korn metal.

Re: favourite metal bands

Well by now we know you dont think slipknot's metal, or korn (tough with korn i agree)
its all over the music boards, almost every thread about metal, or where the name slipknot falls we can see you posting your dislking towards slipknot, we get it now. Its getting annoying.
