it is metal, but people dont see it because the huge majority of people posting and these days in general are listening to heavyer and heavyer death-type metal and the category of metal is moving to heavyer sounds.

ok so my previous ones werent very metal, i was just being a bell and putting my favourites. but system is metal, but if you dont think so how do you categorise it?

System of a Down are nu metal, and Coheed and Cambria are alternative rock by all categorisation I can find. Seriously, they're not even as heavy as Led Zeppelin, a band that most knowledgeable fans would not call metal (although certainly they were and still are a strong influence on it). That doesn't mean they're bad, but I don't know if I'd put them on a list of metal bands. Rock, definitely, but metal seems a stretch.

As for Einherjer, sure, they are not really the definitive Viking metal band (though I'm not sure who I'd give that title to; earlier Enslaved, Vintersorg, Hammerheart-era Bathory, Moonsorrow, and others make more convincing grabs for that title), but I just thought the similarities between the. and Coheed and Cambria were quite interesting, considering the difference in genre, release date, origin, etc..

Also, I'm really starting to enjoy Borknagar. I picked up their 2004 album Epic, and while it's nothing I haven't heard before in some form or another, they sure do put on a good show, even if it's almost entirely due to Mr. V's vocals. That man can make almost anything worth listening to.

Early Megadeth is all that's worth getting. Grab Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?, Rust In Peace and Countdown To Extinction.

Coheed could be passed off as art rock in all honesty, generic term for progressive bands that can't fit under the basic titles of symphonic prog, neo-prog, krautrock, etc but eh.

For definitive Viking metal band, BFD - Twilight and then Blood On Ice Bathory defined the style for sure. Nowadays though I'd have to place the torch into the hands of Moonsorrow, Falkenbach, and depending on how they develop and what they bring to the Viking metal table in the future Fjoergyn and Equilbrium.

I like Borknagar, early stuff anyways and the most recent album. I like all of their stuff, but I find that the albums that Garm worked on seem to be the best. Origin however is fantastic. It is nice to have another album showcasing Vintersorg's clean vocals (even if they sadly arn't the folky style he used in Otyg.)

i dont think im willing to accept System as nu metal. their first album - self titled - was definately much heavier than most nu metal, and much less clean. also the vocals are really deep on that album, ignoring Serj's crazy high notes, but maybe im thinking of all the crappy sell out poppy nu metal that appeared around 2001 time. Systems sound changes a lot as well, and i dont think it can all be put under one category, the difference from the first to latest albums is staggering (apart from the usual short trck length).

also id say that some Coheed is heavier than Led Zep and some isnt. the fact is Led Zep are much funkier and lets face it, unique.

Re: favourite metal bands

It's nu metal, and even their first album seems to pale in comparison to true metal. Coheed and Cambria are quite possibly one of my top bands, but they are still not metal. Remember, a lot of their songs aren't as 'hard' as Welcome Home.

But everyone's perceptions of metal today is disgusting. MCR label themselves as metal on their Myspace and Purevolume, and millions quietly obey and label them that as well.

Yeah, no.

Re: favourite metal bands

the genre you seem to be reffering to as "true metal" appears to be death metal, or black metal or whichever of the miriad of superheavy metal genres which now exist, blending seemlessly and never quite managing to get away from the death growling and quad bass pedal mashing. Systems first album is a shining example of metal. nu metal lacks the style and talent of a voice like serj's, and does not often match the dirtyness of Darons guitar on that album. (maybe some Korn?). the fact is system are pretty damn unique so people have a hard time placing them

haha just noticed that comment about My Chemical Romance. theyre sraight up emo and to deny it just seems to be admitting to be part of a pretty crap movement in music

I agree that MCr is definately not metal, but System of a Down, I'd, say is at least hard rock.

first of all, Korn do not suck. and Slipknot are not nu metal, what the hell? they are like experimental heavy metal. SOAD are not crap they are unique, unlike most boring monotone superheavy deathstyle metal, it all sound the same, they just bash their guitars and stupid quad pedals, they dont even usually use real double pedals

Here comes the ignorance train, next stop: your post.

For one, death metal is much more than mindless guitar riffs and way too much bass. There is considerable noteworthy skill involved in playing death metal on guitar and it takes a lot more skill than you think just to play even a simple, constant beat throughout a death metal song. A good example of superior drumming in death metal is Max Durhmel of Kataklysm. As for guitar, look at Necrophagist.

One last thing, Slipknot is nu metal. Don't even know why you're labling them as experimental, they haven't done anything 'experimental' in their music as far as I can tell, just random, horrbile sounding noise.

Re: favourite metal bands

I think the most experimental thing they have done was rotating drums and stuff.

Still, that was pretty lame.
